I wanted to answer one of the most common questions I see on the videos I've made. "I want to buy a paintball gun and I have $350. What should I get?" I don't like the question, because there are a LOT of variables in there that aren't covered.

So in this show, I'm attempting to give an idea of what's out there for $350. It's all explained in the video.

Due to the bad rap Spyder has gotten, a lot of people would tell you to avoid Spyders and go for Azodin instead. But 2009 Spyder improved its product line. So if you get a Pilot or Electra from 2009 on, you should be OK.

However, the product line improvement skipped the MR-1. It got no improvements.

As a Spyder MR-1 owner, I'd have to recommend avoiding this gun. It has a crappy single rubber detent that tends to get sheared off (even if you are careful and put the bolt in correctly). It has an outdated angled stovepipe feedneck that you have to attach one of those angled plastic elbows to (pretty much ensuring a later $30.00 purchase for an upgraded clamping feedneck). And above all, the thing has spring problems. I've tried everything, and I can't get mine to crono right. Also, as a very minor thing, the removable stock rides too high to properly aim down the barrel while wearing a mask.

After a year of trying to get it to act like a decent gun, I gave up and bought a used Classic 68 Automag for $70.00 (about what I paid for my MR-1 as it so happens).

So yeah, can't say I'm a fan of the MR-1 line from Spyder. It was bad enough that I started using a cheap old-style Trracer Maverick pump gun ($30.00 off eBay) instead of the MR-1. And I don't even play pump very well! But it got to the point where I just wanted a gun that would actually WORK (which the Trracer always did, incidentally).
