They are the ones who cant help but to stand out on the scenario field - mostly due to the strange outfits I guess.
They wear period costumes & may talk in a funny accent.. They may be friend, foe or neutral, but regardless, they hold the clues & props that your team needs to win. Golden cups, bags of game money, mysterious envelopes, nerf swords, funny hats & remote control toy dinosaurs...the role player knows these things well, for they are the tools of his strange trade....

***

So last year I started playing some character roles in some big scenario games, and have become totally hooked on this new (to me anyway) way to play the game. It adds so much depth to the game & is nothing like any other kind of paintball experience Ive had in almost 22 years of playing.

Sound off here about your experiences as a Scenario Role Playing Specialist.

Well, I’ve played in over 30 RP Scenarios and had character roles in over half of those.

This was one of the more memorable roles I’ve had:

MXS’s Predator 3 – Dropzone Paintball in Lawrence KS (2002).

Short storyline cap: An Alien spacecraft has crash-landed on earth, the humans are trying to steal alien tech, the aliens are trying to fix their craft and get off earth.

We were recruited to play on the Alien/Predator side and I signed up as demo like always. I noticed that there was a role on the Pred side that was also a demo so I applied for and got it.

Friday night after the Role-Players meeting I had a short one-on-one with Mother (Diane Howe – MXS’s coordinator/producer) and she was up to her tricks like always. I was given some very interesting “Alien Demo Only” ordinance. First was a Nerf Vortex (the larger size than the LAW rounds) that was a 1 use HE “bomb”. Next was a Frisbee. This was to simulate the shoulder mounted “cannon” that you see the Predators use in the movies. It was multi-use and could be used against players AND helos/bunkers! I had the normal Q&A session with Mom so I was sure I was within the rules with this new ordinance and the cool thing I found out was I could BT with the Frisbee. I was also impervious to its blast when bt’n… WOOT!

The day portion on Saturday went pretty smooth; I completed all the demo missions with ease since the Frisbee was re-usable and I could just tap the target to demo it. I also completed all my personal missions.

Now to the story – the night game.

At the beginning of the night portion our General decided it was time to hit their base and attempt a GK/Base kill. Since I was the only Predator/Demo with special ordinance I was “IT”. I figure this will be a suicide rush for me so I drop most my gear at our base and go in no marker, just the Nerf and Frisbee. I get my teammate (and Pilot) Wipity to fire up a helo (Alien Hover Craft) and we recruit 3 from the Badger battalion (RiverRat, Snoop and a third?) plus some random kid “who’s never been on a helo before”. I jump on tail-end and we head out in a direct route to the opposition’s base as the light begins to fade. As we near the base I see they are still getting things prepared as the night game has just started, there are plenty of players milling around. As we cross a dry creek bed, the “kid” takes a digger (but holds on to the helo rope!); Wipity “lands” the helo to make sure the kids OK. I drop off the back and hunker down. The guys take back off and head around to the back side of the base (opposite of me) and the opposition starts to take notice. As all eyes are on the helo, I slip in for a Frisbee throw. I get decently close with some cover between me and the base and attempt a toss… of course I didn’t see the low hanging branch and I get a deflection. I was expecting to get lit-up but funny thing is nobody noticed! I walk out of my cover and retrieve the Frisbee, and head into the base. I get to the corner of the CP, do the TAP – “BOOM!” Luckily the base Ref was standing about 10 feet from me when I BT’d the base and he screams “EVERYBODY FREEZE!” he checks my cards and ordinance and starts pointing out eliminations… I got a 15’ blast radius around the base; I took out about 90% of the players in the area. As the elims are getting sorted out I call myself neutral and head to the base door to tape it off as “blown”. While this is going on my counterparts on the helo are doing their part, Wipity has dropped the guys off in various “hides” on the back side of the base and they are harassing the few players left. There’s nobody at the CP now except for me and the base ref, I go to him and call myself “in” and he says “Nice move!” Since I’ve played this field multiple times and have actually played out of this base before, I know a nice little spot I can “hang out” and see what develops. I’m now really regretting not bring my marker!

It’s totally dark now and I see a few enemy players filter back into the base area, I walk up and BT them out with the Frisbee. My guys at the back door are staying far enough away as to not have a “hot insert” at the base, so I wait for insertion time. The group comes in being led by a ref, they stop at the base (you need to tag in to be a “live” player). Since the base is still blown and the General/XO are MIA, they sorta mill around. I toss in the Nerf – BOOM! The reinsert is all dead. I walk in to confirm, plenty of the opposing players are a bit miffed, they just walked all the way in from the dead-zone and now have to head back out. The base ref says “WOW, didn’t realize you were still lurking around – nice move!”

I’m not sure how many of the harasser’s are still at the back-door and I’m a bit worried they will shoot me out in the dark so I move out into the bunker field in front of the enemy CP to see what’s going on. I approach a few players and one gets nervous and pre-empts my BT and gets me, I still not sure who’s side they were on (could have been fratricide). Oh well, I’ve done my job!

Post game I was talking to a few buddies that were on the human side and the night game comes up. Turns out that Knight Owl (of the Renegades) recognized me just before I blew the CP, his General (Professor of the Mag Dawgs) was standing next to him and he bodily threw him into the bunker field saving him. I missed the GK by INCHES!

Seems Professor was hanging out in the bunker field for the entire time I was at his base, BT’n everyone that got close. I don’t think we ever did get him that night!

Now THATS role-playing...almost like throwing yourself on a grenade or something. Professor was lucky to have such a dedicated player close at hand.
Great story too, sounds like a ton o' fun!

Hmmm

Nobody else role-plays????

I added names/teams in my post above because some might recognize the players – KnightOwl from the Renegades has been to multiple D-Days (in OK) and I believe was one of the founders/instructors for the Sniper School.
RiverRat from the Badger Battalion is also a D-Day regular and one of the best Role-Players I know – If he’s at the game he’s a “shoe-in” for MVP!
Professor and the MagDawgs (outa TX) aren’t around as much as they use to be, but still show up for some of the bigger TX events (MXS/Viper) like ThrowDown and TZ.

Here’s another Predator type role I had a few years back.

APP in Greeley CO, 1 day event.

This time a predator craft had crashed (again) but it was the US vs the Russians trying for the Alien tech. I with a few teammates was reffing this event.

To put a twist on the game and let us Refs get some trigger time, we were put in (in small numbers) as a third faction – the Predators. We got to hunt humans until we ran out of paint or ……

Interesting twist on us being Predators, we had a small kill-zone: Top of the pack/belt to mid chest (including back). With a proper “paintball stance”, the frontal kill-zone was covered by the marker/hopper plus fore-arms… we were pretty much invincible!

Our first excursion out, two teammates of mine and I rolled the field from one end to the other. Taking multiple hits is a regular thing for me so it wasn’t a problem being a Predator; we had waves of players running away from us. Some tried to slip in behind us but we normally caught them. The few that did get back shots were unlucky and missed the kill zone and we took’m out. We over-ran the bunker that was supposed to be our downed craft and decided to hold it for a bit. With us standing behind plywood bunkers there wasn’t any way to take us out. Both teams tried to gang up on us but it didn’t work out. We were finally called off by the head-ref (too many missions in that area we were snuffing out.) By this time I was getting a bit low on paint (shot over 900 rounds) so we headed back towards the main insertion point to get back to reffing. On the way back I figured I should at least shoot all my paint so I kneeled down behind a tree (kill zone completely covered). I lean out and see 3 players setting up on a main trail – I unload on them and take one out – his buddies unload on me and I get multiple gogg shots. I wipe off the hits and continue to fire, never taking cover as they fire on me… I guess they must have missed the pre-game briefing and must have thought I was the biggest cheater ever! They kept nailing me and I kept firing back, even the guy I initially hit started firing back. I’m laughing now and finally get up and start walking towards them still firing, they keep lighting me up. I think they finally figured it out or just gave up because they all walked when I got within a few yards. By this time I really couldn’t see JACK and was down to a couple rounds so I walked too. I tried to catch them to explain what was up but by the time I found my barrel bag and got my goggs clean enough to see; I had lost them. I laughed all the way to the dead-zone. To this day it’s one of the best days of sling paint, even though it was less than an hour of field time playing. Better than the multiple “magic bunker” moves I’ve done! (medic with you in a bunker that gives him complete cover).

Only if you were actually wearing bunny ears on your head & a big fluffy cotton ball on your backside. I will also accept throwing carrots at your opponents while yelling "Whats up, Doc?"

Yeah, the pink bunny ears and the white-as-snow tail really helped me blend in to my surroundings. I didn't bring carrots, but I had a microphone just to make sure he heard me yell .

I was a Spy on the Bandits side during Wayne Dollack's Madd Maxx scenario game. I don't recall off hand how many times I was in the enemy base, capped their general, blew up their CP, but it was enough to get me MVP at it. Great first time playing as a spy too.

Last time I tried to infiltrate, I was captured & executed with a golf club...
Unusual, but effective.

Those MVP award sure feel good, dont they? Nothing beats the recognition of your peers to make you feel like a superhero!

Not really, I felt that alot of other players deserved it more than me like those leading squads and such into action. Sure I was good at sneaking and blowing stuff up, and I did lead a group of the other team against themselves stating that the spy is attacking us, but I'm not a fan of awards for the most part.

I ended up getting executed when they put an assasin in the enemy command base. Luckily he didn't have to wait very long. Fun game, but next time when I win MVP I'd rather do it for a leadership role rather than being able to work alone deep behind enemy lines.

Highlighted comments show exactly why I think you probably got the award.
Good sportsmanship, a dash of humility, and a "can-do" attitude in a player can make a General's life so much easier.
Congrats!

I remember the DropZone game very well Flip...especially the night portion. What I remember about it was freezing my bottom off radioing the human base when ya'll were coming in on the attack again and again and again. I spent the time hallucinating I was being attacked by the different people I knew on the Alien side except for TB for some reason. Amazingly although I found out the next day ya'll were looking for me, the only people to find me were Renegades and Sun Spiders. From what I hear one of the Renegades, Mouse I think it was, got a little worried when the log he had been shooting over rolled over and said "Thank God" once I had gotten the base to get them to stop shooting past me. Only bad part of the night was I learned that Professor had forgotten I was up on the hill and was about to leave me at the end of the night portion. Was a great game that I really enjoyed.

Hey Frankie!
Been a few years!

I guess I forgot you and (for that matter) TB was at that game... so many Viper & MXS games at Dropzone they kinda run together! Sure have had the weather at those KS games too, from 116 in the shade to snow! Forgot to waterproof my boots for the Riddick game, I think I lost a dozen layers of skin off my feet - closest to trench-foot I ever wanna get!

Hope to see ya next season if I ever get the guys outa Colorado-

MAFIA!!!!!There should be mafia as a Role Player. They would carry pistols and kidnap people.
92% of teens would drop dead if Abercrombie and Fitch said breathing wasn't cool. If your one of the 8% who would be laughing their butt off, put this in your sig.
