im well aware that all steel tanks need to be re tested every 5 years...

i just need a little clarification..

a tank with the date 05/05 (may 2005)

does that need to be tested BEFORE may 2010

or does it mean AFTER may it needs to be tested??

im leaning on the BEFORE part but im not 100% sure

im already planning on replacing HPA tank and i will eventually send in my older one to be tested.

i just want clarification on when the tank is passed its date.

Think of it as a car registration. If you get it inspected before the sticker date, then it's fine, but wait until after and you run the risk of getting a ticket. Have it hydro'ed before the date and you'll be fine.

It's certified for use from 05-05 til 05-10.

It's not certified 06-10.

you won't be "pulled over" but any field or store that you try to get the tank filled at would/should decline you if it is out of hydro as that would be highly unsafe of them

I'm not saying that you would, I'm just saying that it is similar to a car registration. You can drive on the last month on the sticker, but as soon as that month is up, it has to be replaced or renewed, basically like the tank. You can use it the last month, but after that you should get it rehydro'ed. You won't get a ticket or anything like that, but fields might not let you fill it once it's past.

that 05/05 is the "born on date". you add 5 years to it ( if its a carbon fibre hpa ) and that is the expiration date. one of the fields i play at is extremely strict about those dates and will refuse to air it up if it is past the expiration date. in tourney play where you air it up, it is not policed as well ( depending on what sanctioning body is running the tournament ) but you take a risk for yourself and everyone else around you if you continue to use it after that date without getting it re-hydro'ed - re-certified

It means that when it becomes june, nobody is legally allowed to fill your tank until it's re-tested.

Ideally, you should get it tested well before May 2010.

Remember, you're handling a bottle of highly compressed gas. Playing loose with the rules is not a good idea.

The cylinder remains live through May 2010, and is expired on 1 June 2010.

You do not need to test in advance but without testing it becomes illegal to fill, you should also empty it if not tested.

If you need continuity then try to time testing for a convenient date, if you don't need continuity either because you say you are getting another cylinder or you are not playing at the time then you can let it expire and test when convenient.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The point made about tournaments being slack and not checking you before filling is no excuse to fill an out of date cylinder.
You as the owner and user are responsible for you own actions.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I don't know the costs in the US but in the UK it is not worth the cost to post a steel cylinder for testing, as a new one may be bought. However it is worth while if you can hand it over and collect later.

If you buy a new one then put the expired one aside (empty) until it is convenient to get tested as a spare, or gift it on to someone who can get it tested.
