a modded sprinkler valve? are not all sprinkler valves electronic? or is that pretty much just a ball valve?

look here this will tell you just about everything you need to know.

I like using hunter valves. The spot where the selinoid screws in is a 1/4 inch npt thread. Because of this you don't need to drill and tap a new hole and you don't have to jb weld fill a hole. All you have to do is remove the selinoid. , then with the diaphragm out drill out. The metal pin hole, put
A little plumbers putty in the pass through hole and attach the blowgun where the selinoid used to be. It takes may ten minutes to do. Vs. 24 hours if you include cure time for the jb weld with the other valves.

Here is a couple pics of my work in progress to give you some ideas. Its just the working guts I am going to start dressing it up soon.

nice, but i dont suppose you have any pics of it without the wood casing? ;)

I took off as much of the wood as i could in these pics.

I am using a 26 inch x 4 inch expansion chamber, a 6 foot x 3 inch barrel, and a modded sprinkler vaulve to fire it. On the front of the expansion chamber i have a pressure relief vaulve set to 100 psi, and on the back there is a gauge and a regulator.

Its not a ball valve the basic operation of a sprinkler valve ther is a rubbe stopper at the end of the electronic selinoid. The stopper blocks a small hole above the diaphragm. When the selinoid is charged it slowly let's out the back pressure on the diaphragm that opens the valve. Modding the valve replaces the selinoid with an air compressor blowgun and increases the size of the hole and filling in the pass through hole. This makes the valve open instantly when you hit the blowgun trigger. I am on my blackberry right now when I get home I can go more in depth.

hum.. interesting.. problem is i didnt find any sprinkler valves that had 1" holes. 3/4 was the largest i found. and it was electronic. but i see you modded yours to be manual.

If your lowes dosnt have 1 inch valves you probably will have to find a irrigation supply store. With a little research you should be able to find one unless nobody in your city / state uses sprinkler systems in there homes. Most irrigation and plumbing companies dont buy there supplies from home depot / lowes.

I haven't checked menards yet.. they might have something.. But also trying to decide if its worth it to use that or if a ball valve will be good enough. Especially since it looks like id have to modify the sprinkler valve to get it how i need it anyway.. humm..

what about shooting a paintball grenade out of this howitzer? well actually forget that idea. I just remembered that you would have to pull the pin before you shoot it out of the barrel. Doing that would just make it go all over the inside of the barrel. how about mashed potatoes yeah there you go. with cheese and garlic flavoring too. ah sweet im gunna have to try this.
If you can't hack it, then I suggest you pack it!
I'm on it like white on rice, with a glass of milk in a snow storm.
Doesn't matter what gun you have, as long as you can hit what you're looking at.

Even if you could trow a paint grenade from that thing dont forget the fact that you could accidentally hit someone. For what ive heard it is not recommended to use canons and launchers for direct hits when paint nades are being fired. Is better if you just use a nerf football or something like that.

The primary ammunition i will be using is paint filled water balloons. I am in the process now of designing a sabot for the balloons to help protect them coming out the barrel. At 80 Psi they go pretty far at a 45 degree angle but alot of my test fires broke on exit from the barrel.

This is also what i planned to use. Let me know if you find a successful sabot design, and what materials/balloons you used.
