Ok you know how on a lot of X-Ball fields are made of astroturf? Well i was watching the Natural Selections video the other day and noticed A LOT of unused paint lying on the field...which brings me to my question.

Say someone off the break dove into a back bunker, but when he hit the ground he landed on one of the unused paintballs and it popped on him/her. As a ref you don't know what really happened, for all you know he could have been hit off the break, which isnt uncommon. What would you do in this situation?

Thats whay you have more than one ref on the field at tournies. But I myself would probably call him safe if I saw some of the paint break on the ground when he landed one the paintball[s].

That exact situation happened to a guy on my team, the ref pulled him, his lane wasnt covered, and we lost. So we took second for the tourney. Honestly i thought this was un-fair, there was unbroken paint everywhere, and i think its the field staffs responsibility to clean this up, to avoid problems like this.

i would run up to him, check on the ground near him to see if there was broken paint, if there was...hes safe if there wasnt hes out....its hard to make that decision when you are the only ref. also if he is know to cheat, that would kinda make me want to call him out (karma) lol and the thought that it is more likely that he was shot and didnt tell you about then honest players.

At most big tourneys, they rake the fields after the game...

Yes, they normally rake or brush the paint away. And hits look different than someone kneeling on a paintball, but sometimes things like that happen, you can't blame the referees for making a call.

You can blame them for not cleaning he fields though.

When I ref I normally can tell a shot from someone leaning on a paintball. But you know **** happens. Just calmly talk to the ref but its their call not yours.

If you are paying close attention on the break and know he didn't get hit I would call him safe. But if I was unsure I would have ti make a judgment call, prolly would be safe beacuse I can tell the difference sometimes. But if he is a known cheater I may call him out.

Im lucky enough to work at a field where the X-Ball fields are covered with gravel, HORRIBLE for sliding, but the paint soaks in.
You gas up the marker, put on the gloves, strap on the mask, and walk onto the field.. it doesn't matter that you failed a test, that your girlfriend broke up with you last nite, or that you got a ticket on the way there.. your world is right for the next couple hours, this is your heaven on earth.. live it.. love it.. Paintball 4 life..

Ya the field I use to play at had rocks all over. And there were no refs (the field was on a militery post meaning really poor) so it was all honor system. And there was no unbroken paint.

Dont they rake the fields after a game to help make sure that this wont happen? If it did happen and they were diving or something it wouls be smeared all down them. Maybe yuo could tell by that.

That's how you're supposed to tell, if it looks like a break (a splat), or does it look like a smear. Good refs can tell the difference between a hit and a smear.
