10 ft?
15 ft?
20 ft?

Does the player who is on the receiving surrender have a choice or is he out no matter what? What are your fields rules?

10ft, w/ the choice is how the fields here are.

Instead of bunkering someone though, there is the bunker tag. You touch the bunker that the player(s) is behind and he is out.

The surrender guideline is not so much about distance but a matter of safety. IMHO

Surrender is a courtesy to a player, which you have the drop on. Your position is one of complete dominance. You are usually to close to shoot safely and so you offer surrender. If the person does not wish to accept your offer he may turn and try shooting you.

It is more of a judgment call and difficult to call as a Ref in a rec game.

I find it funny how, when you are the attacking player and shoot someone within 10 feet most places would say that is against the rules for rec ball. But if you are the player being attacked, hitting the attacker within 10ft is ok.

Not to sound cruel, but we do not use a surrender rule. We use good judgement in deciding to shoot or not. Nobody gets shot point blank. We call surrender and if the person doen't surrender, we shoot.

Yeah it kind of sucks when you try to protect someone by asking them to surrender. Then, the shoot you under the mask before saying no. There should not be a choice. you are either out or in.

Safety? A mask can take a hit at point blank range at 300fps without any problem. The rule is basically to keep people from crying and getting into fights. I play by whatever the field rules are.

It also depends on the situation. I was playing the other day at a field which had a 10-foot surrender rule. There was this kid on the opposite team who just surrendered a couple of guys on my team. He didn't see me and I was about 10 feet away from him behind a tall bush. There was also a lot of fighting around me and I wasn't sure who was where. I didn't want to waste time asking for surrender, because some one else might notice this bunch of players in one area (the other surrendered guys were still there), so I stepped back a foot or so and shot him once in the side of the head. It hurt and he wasn't happy, but this isn't golf. A head shot is the only shot I had, unfortunately, but it worked out well for me. It definitely comes down to judgment and the situation.

Also, it was pointed out to me that some fields only suggest that you surrender someone. That means it's a courtesy, not a rule. If I was playing in like a urban field and came around the corner to find someone there, I'd probably shoot, point blank or not. If it's allowed. Same thing when I run up on a bunker.

Urban, room to room fighting, there are no surrender rules; there can't be. I mean, you break into a room and yell, "SURRENDER!!!," then get lit up.

In recball, however. My friends usually play as such:

Barrel/Hand Tag-Mandatory surrender, you're out, you're ashamed, get off the field.
15" Surrender Rule-Ask for surrender at 15", they've got two seconds before they get shot in the pod pack (probably the safest place to shoot someone, if you can hit it)

Those seem to work to keep people from getting massive welts.

A 15'' surrender rule? Why not just barrel tag them? ;) We have no surrender rule. We don't even have a barrel tag rule, but I consider a point blank surrender a barrel tag. We have bunker tag rules, and generally if the ref sees you sneaking up on someone and they have no idea that you're coming he will call the one about to get blasted out.

To be honest I get close enough to shoot them without breaking the rule.

I agree shoot them in the boot, but from a safe distance, if you cant do that barrle tap them and say they are out. At 15 ft. or closer certain shots from a paintball gun can seriously wound a person, possibly kill them.
