I watched a bit of a doomsday show the other day. They talked to people about what they think will happen, and one guy is just flat out nuts.

The short version of what he believes is we are in the Matrix. If he jumps from a certain cliff on 12-12-2012 at 11:11 am then he'll stop the program from shutting down. And that he'll land safely.

Hopefully there will be a news crew there to watch. I want to hear him declare how stupid he was when he breaks both his legs.

Was it Doomsday Preppers? Because most of them are certifiable.

No, not Doomsday Preppers, though I have seen a few episodes of it. I think it was just called Doomsday 2012. Kind of a one-shot deal. One guy said that the Mayan calendar has hidden calculations to prove there will be massive solar flares, which are supposed to reverse planetary rotation. A couple of people were claiming that Nibiru is causing global warming and it's going to get worse as it gets closer (shouldn't we be able to see it by now?).

i have read articles saying the same thing about the solar flares .. that they could easily do a "scorched earth" scenario with the right alignments. if anyone is interested, i could post the links about it, but it is pretty boring stuff as far as the technical details of the orbits and multiple galaxies and stuff. basically the dark rift of the milky way is the intersection of another galaxy, and this dec 21 will be that once in 26000 years that they all align, causing all that.

there are more theories than you can shake a stick at, but we have been having record heats now globally for a couiple of years. i know this summer will be the hottest on record for several states, and i also know that the winters overall, have been getting progressively milder for the last several years. hell, i even saw the sun shining in san francisco when i was out there in March of this year ! ...lol

Solar flares burning the Earth is realistic but I don't imagine too likely.

Personally I think gravity is going to turn off.

HA .. that is an interesting theorem. i would like to know where the big on/off switch is...20K leagues under the sea, or in the center of the earth, or maybe down at the Tim Hortons down the street ?

nuclear reactors overloading, huge dams failing, everyones hair standing straight up ..

I've been looking for a bag for everyday use. I'm torn between a Maxpedition Versipack (haven't decided what size) and the Voodoo Tactical Ergo Pack. Something that can carry a cell phone, tablet, a few files(resumes) and some other odds and ends (knife, maybe a baton, flashlight...)

thoughts?

While the solar tablets seem like a good idea, the case it self doesn't look like what I'm looking for. The Ergo Pack has MOLLE webbing on the front that would allow the quick addition of extra space if needed. The same with some of the Versipacks, though they come in more sizes. The Sabercat looks to be a decent size for a small family.

Neither is good for long term, but for an emergency like a building fire I think they'd be ok.

Here's another question.....

I was looking at the Maglite website. How do the LED fair against the incandescent ones? I know LEDs are supposed to last longer, but in an actual side by side, which is brighter? For example, comparing the ML100 2 cell C to the 2 Cell C White Star.

I'm also considering the Benchmade Houdini Escape Tool. Anyone ever use one? I know Benchamde is a good brand but it's nice to get some first hand accounts on a product.

Wednesday.August 1.2012.
Day 142.

Specifically to your question... the ML100 shines at 137 Lumens while the White Star is at 20 lumens.

Here are some of the general differences between the standard incandescent and LED...

Bulbs depend on a filament heated to incandescence. It produces both light and heat. The filament is susceptible to breakage due to shock, such as dropping the light or knocks against an object.
Bulbs typically last about 6 hours before it burns out.
Bulbs use up a set of batteries in about 2 hours.
Bulbs typically produce a yellowish light.

LEDs produce light electronically by changing an energy state. There is mostly light and little heat.
LEDs are encapsulated in clear epoxy and are shockproof. You can drop it with no damage.
LEDs typically last 100,000 hours. That's 11 YEARS of continuous light.
LEDs use up the same set of batteries in about 60 hours.
LEDs typically produce a white light similar to daylight.

The houdini car escape kit sounds like a decent kit, and its compact and has multiple tools ... never used one but it looks like someone put a great deal of thought into it, and "benchmade" makes a good product.

The biggest disadvantage of LEDs is the price. Other than that, they are superior. I have an LED flashlight AND the good old Stupid Light in/on my bag though. And multiple color lenses.

I haven't tried that particular Benchmade product, but I do like my Benchmade Pika II knife. Plan to add a couple more in the future. If I were going for an emergency knife, the 915 Triage would be a top candidate. Carbide glass breaker, strap/belt cutter, good slicing blade (with premium blade steel), G10 handles, AXIS lock, yada yada.

I'm not an expert but why would a gun cleaning kit be illegal? An M4 might be illegal depending on where you are.
