i found out recently that our field has mandatory eye and ear protection, but the mouth peace is optional, most of the players use them (like 99.99%) but this one old guy that decided to get back into the game after like 20years and decidend to play with a half mask (i diden't see him get shot once in 2 days of play so far by the way)

that just seems like a bad idea beacuse you could lose a tooth or get a paintball down the throat if you forget to keep your mouth closed.

and for reffs its still a bad idea beacuse reffs can get shot as much as players, by acident of course, but they still get the acosional shot.

half masks=bad idea-drummer

Has anybody seen the newer smaller masks? The wearers can easily get shot in the mouth. Yes, there is a greater chance of injury. It's the person's choice. If he gets hurt, the liability is the player's. That's one reason for waivers. Anyway, the greater emphasis should be on protecting the eyes.

A proflex cant really be flipped up most of the way because the flexible part doesnt make up most of the mask. <_<

I get shot more as a ref than as a player so that idea is even more out the window.

Have masks were phased out for a reason.

do you/your field allow half masks
No

would you play with a half mask?
No, your face is made up of a lot more then skin, and muscle! You can do a lot of damage!

would you allow player wearing a proflex fliped most of the way up
Depends, but most cases, I'd say yes. Their is still a lot of cover with it flipped up.

would you reff with a half mask
OMG, no!

Back in the 90s, most tournament players used goggles only. This lasted well into the semi-automatic era. It hurts, yes, but those players wanted free movement, the lack of fog and the fleshy bounce factor. The leagues actually had to put rules in place to enforce facial protection. Many players even cut their JT bottoms to only cover their lips and chins so as to be able to tightly shoulder backbottle guns. This resulted in the rule that states modifified masks may not be used.

My field allows anything as long as your eyes are protected. It's the players choice if he or she wants to go goggles only. Several players on my team regularly play with only JT goggles and a bandana over their face. I personally referee with goggles only in the summer, just to beat the heat a little. I've been shot in the nose once, and that stung like hell, but it's usually worth it for the comfort and the ease with which you can yell and communicate. (ever blow a fox40 whistle while wearing a mask bottom? ouch.)

I dunno, maybe its because my dad was notorious for being heard throughout the building when he was a teacher, but I have no problem yelling and no tbeing heard. People complain of the wind running through their mask and they cant hear people but they can hear me. Though I will admit, I talk softly but I dont talk when I ref.

Our field owner usually only wears a half mask. His 14 and 15 year old use it occassionally i have also. Mostly only when we ref though. our outdoor fields we dont get shot as often but at our indoor its up close shooting so we wear full mask. I think if someone else wanted to do it he would probably reccomend that they dont but if they insisted as long as they are approved for paintball and not modified he'd allow it. As a ref its much easier to communicate on the field but ear shots can definately hurt. I would definately discourage new players from them. Reality is though that its the field owner choice. Oh yeah and id like to place a bounty of 20 dollars to the player that shoots the cigarette oughta our field owners mouth while he refs. :)

The refs at my field, and anyone who isn't really in the line of fire, are allowed to wear half masks or just eye goggles (PB rated) at my field.

I don't have a problem with it either.

do you/your field allow half masks
No

would you play with a half mask?
No, I like my face how it is... and I like bounces...

would you allow player wearing a proflex fliped most of the way up
Yes, if they want to take the risk for that extra bit of clearance, go for it. The mask still protects the nose, eyes, and some of the mouth.

would you reff with a half mask
Proflex Flipped, yeah, 1/2 mask, no...

We require everyone wear full face masks at our field...I personally wouldn't wear a half mask just because I hate getting shot in the grill as it is. I couldn't imagine getting shot in the mouth...just doesn't sit right with me.

Do you or your field allow half masks?
Yes, as long as the player is aware of the risk.

Would you play with a half mask?
Yes, as a slightly experienced player, I believe that a lower face shot would be harder to achieve. Besides, there is much more chance of bounces and no fog. I find condensation near the grill uncomfortable as well.

Would you allow players wearing a proflex flipped most of the way up?
Not really, this is not really recommended. Although, there is still a lot of cover with it flipped up.

Would you "Ref" with a half mask?
With older, more experienced well-behaved players - yes. With new players, God no. But, it would still be good for shouting and whistling.

So no flipped up proflex but yes to half masks. <_<
