someone said 18 was way to many, i can take 50 easy... whats going on?

also if its a easy group then 80ish is fine, last seneario game i started confident enough but when people started yelling and there were about 160 standing looking at me and yelling and i lost control of the group, fortunately for me a more experienced reff was nearby and saved me

Suuure you can.

Fifty is way too many to be watching at once. If they're packed in tight you may be able to watch for masks and such but as far as cheating goes you have to expect the worse and theres no way you can watch that many. Especially in woods/scenario you cant predict the action and theres a lot more cover so its even harder to watch people. Does that mean thats how it goes down, no but thats how it should be. Confidence doesnt have anything to do with it, experience and some know-how do. Thats why you think you could handle as many as you did, and as many as you think your handeling now.

I usually watch from 20-40 people for Woodsball, and my only concern is safety, if I see someone cheat, I'll nab em, but otherwise, I'm not running around doing paintchecks, I just check for barrel plugs and masks.

For speedball, the most is about 14, sometimes renter groups are more people, but thats easy to ref because I can see almost everyone.

Lol, you see I'm the kinda ref that as soon as you yell paint check I've already slid in behind you and started checkin. I think its fun. I have a competition with myself somtimes to see how fast I can get there. Naturally I sleep very well that night.

Lol, the fields are far to large for me to be everywhere at once, and renters never call paint checks anyways, so I'm good :P

Yea I'm lucky, the field I ref is pretty small right now because we dont have everything built. I encourage people to call paint checks. Hell, if I see a bounce I still run in there and check anyway.

Don't get me wrong I go to big fields and ref, but they're not 'official' fields or some field is providing the gear and I hear about it. Basically, I'm kinda free agent when it comes to big games. B)

Well,

Of course, perspective is always required when looking at a game. Yes, scenario vs. speedball vs. indoor vs. woodsball. I play mostly woodsball, but have had to call speedballers and a simple scenario. The most players at our field has been about 60. But, the terrain is trecherously funky. It goes on four different topographical levels different by about 5 - 10 feet. It is tricky. We usually get by with two to three, but again because of high grass and the different levels, we depend on the reg's to make sure that the games continue without a hitch. But, we always have at least one problem every opening... So, it always depends on the perspective.

If you are running from one area to another so much that you have to take breaks between runs, then maybe its time for another ref. But, if you can establish the scenario well organized, then you should be good to go.

Easy...

I.E. :(

Really it depends. In a firefight one ref can control pretty much teh entire thing, but small confrontations across the field are harder to manage, especially if the field is rather large. Speedball, three refs per field should suffice. One for the middle and one for each of the backs usually works. As for the age of the ref, yes, if you're 16 and reffing 25-year olds, you're going to want to make sure you do everything right, so there's more pressure.

Every time somebody shoots at someone who isn't wearing a mask, someone drowns a sack of puppies.
Every time somebody purposely overshoots someone, a dolphin is harpooned and eaten alive.
Every time somebody wipes, a family of bunnies gets run over by a Steamroller. That's why they have to reproduce so fast. Theoretically, that's how dinosaurs became extinct.

what i see at my feild is the refs are more there as a person to keep things moving along

the outs are mostly called by players

we have alot of kids and one of the refs is on foot and the other cruises on a four wheller and thats it

theres about 20+ of us playing in guna battles everywhere.

so i think refs in woodsballis more about maintaining borders and the order of things

in speed ball there should be at least 4 refs and a head ref no mater the number of players
Going to be in Alaska check out my up to date post where you can get your questions answeredAlaska

You know by having them on the ends its harder becuase your looking at the face of the bunker. Its much easier to ref on a sideline.

Terrain wasn't mentioned at all...there's a huge difference between very light woods or a field and a heavy woods area.

The field I Ref at has a policy of a max of about 12 players per Ref, and we usually partner up for a day. We run pretty small courses though (you can normally just barely see your opponents' start point in between bunkers...so about 150 yards usually), so our action is probably a lot faster than it is for many of you guys.

The thing about adult players is that the majority of them have enough common sense to recognize and respect the Ref's authority. It also helps if the field owner stands firmly behind his refs.
