Over on another thread, we were talking about this. So I figured I'd put it in another thread by itself for anyone who wants a cleaner looking Brigade page but doesn't want to like take lessons in basic web design.

Well, considering that teaching is one of the things I do best, I figured I'd start a thread for all the people who want to make thier brigade page look pretty spiffy, and do a few cool tricks in the meanwhile. What you need to do is add "HTML" into your brigade information. To see what it will look like, click over to my brigade page and see what I've done with it. And with a few choice links, you too can have some amazing things on your site too.

Lesson 1 : Line Breaks

If you want to make your log entry look spiffy, or at least less cluttered, use what we geeks call a "Line Break". To do so, you need to enter the following code in your sentences :

<br><br>

The "BR" tells the web browser that you want a "BReak" inserted. The reason you're putting TWO "Breaks" in place is to create a full line of space between the paragraphs. You COULD get away with only one, but it won't look as uncluttered.

So when you enter your log, you will type this :

And in the end the cops came and no1 got arrested. haha!<br><br>But on a great note I made Tommy surrender!

And when it appears in your log, it will look like this :

Quote

And in the end the cops came and no1 got arrested. haha!

But on a great note I made Tommy surrender!

Line breaks do not need to have "end tags". So what's an "end tag"? Glad you asked.

Lesson 2 : How to make links that work from your brigade page!

So let's say you want to make a link, something to your personal home page or to another place. Just typing in the web address won't do, because it needs to be formatted correctly. So, how do you do that? Use the following code :

<a href="http://www.specialopspaintball.com/brigade/member_view.asp?id=5665">Tyger's Brigade page</a>

To break it down. The "<" and ">" are the tags for the HTML language, the text the browser knows means "do something here.".

A stands for "Anchor", or "YO! Something is here!"
href = Hypertext REFerence, or "Link to another web page"

Then the link, put the link in "QUOTATION MARKS", so the computer knows where the link begins and ends.

Then your text, you can put anything in here you want, but if there's a description of it, or possibly the link again, that's best.

Then after your text is done, make sure you "close" the anchor with a "/a" in the < and > symbols, which tells the web browser that the area that will link to that site ends there. This is called an "End tag", for obvious reasons. As said before with line breaks, not all HTML needs one of these, but links like this DO. Just remember, DO NOT LEAVE SPACES in your end tags! If you put a space in there, it won't work.

So in the end, you get this :

Quote

Now the fun part. Let's say you want to do that cool trick where your link MAGICALLY pops up in another window? On boards like this one, that just happens automatically and you don't need to bother with it. But on the Brigade pages, it doens't. You need to tell the web browser to open a new window. And you do it like this :

<a href="http://www.specialopspaintball.com/brigade/member_view.asp?id=5665" target="_blank">Tyger's Brigade page</a>

What's different is the target="_blank" at the end before the > symbol. This tells the web browser to create a whole new window with your link inside it.

There's more link tags as well, but unless you're designing a whole web site, you won't need them. Come to think of it, if you know how to link pages, you don't need much else unless you get paid for it.

Lesson 3 : Making something pop out

Final lesson of this post. Let's say you want to make sure that people see that your team name is the "Boonie Rats", but you don't have a link to a web page, and you don't have photos. You want to make it pop off the screen. That's easy, you use a tag for it.

The main tags you're going to want are the following :

<b>Bold</b> <i>italic</i> <u>underline</u> <tt>Typewriter</tt>

There are MANY, MANY more, but for the most part you're only going to need these (and "typewriter" is rare, you never use it for the most part.) What you get in the end looks like this :

Quote

Bold italic underline Typewriter

Remember when you hand-type HTML you ALWAYS need to open, then close, your tags. If you don't close it, you run into situations like this :

Quote

(now imagine a whole page that's a link to one thing...)

So there you have it. Other tags exist, but on the Brigade pages these are all you REALLY need. If you want to know how to link so that people can send you e-mail from your brigade page, ask me here and I'll give that tag as well. It's a simple tag, and I heard rumors they'll be putting that ability in ANYWAY. But, for the most part, there you go.

And remember, this works in your GAME DESCRIPTIONS too, not just your member info! So get descriptive in there!

Instant geek, and you didn't even need to use tape on your glasses!

(edited to fix some context, and to point a few things out. Most of you won't know the difference, but I'm also certifiable. :P )

How do you make things move across teh screen? I remember on a proboards(dont say anything, its free) all you'd have to do is [MOVE]TEXT[/MOVE] or somthing like that. Would HTML work like
<move>TEXT</move>
?

You mean like this?

Simple, the tag is "marquee" So :
<marquee>You mean like this?</marquee>

But I wouldn't use it on your Brigade page, it wouldn't look right.

Now if you can figure out how to make THIS trick without cheating...
