Robert Downey Jr. is officially back in the superhero business.

Production started yesterday on Iron Man 2, the sequel to his 2008 blockbuster about the Marvel Comics character.

Downey reprises his role as a billionaire genius who fights bad guys in a high-tech metal suit that's loaded with gadgets. Iron Man 2 reunites Downey with co-star Gwyneth Paltrow and also features Don Cheadle, who replaces Terrence Howard as the superhero's military ally.

Mickey Rourke is signed on to play a villain, and the cast also includes Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson, who had a cameo at the end of the first Iron Man.

Jon Favreau is back directing again for the sequel that hits theatres May 7, 2010

I really liked the first one. Hopefully the second is just as good.

I think SOME of the sequels out there have done well, going against the traditional "sequels suck" plan. So there is still hope. However, the fact that they have to change actors for one of the characters does not bode well. When they can't keep that kind of consistency, they often do hoover.

It didn't say they were making Cheadle Howards former character. It's quite possible to make a new character and say Howards died or something...

Howard's character wasn't that big of a role in the first movie so even if he is replaced. Besides if Cheadle does play Rhodey he'll end up in his own battle armor as War Machine.

Cheadle's a step up anyway. You won't see me shedding any tears.

I believe in Ironman 2. Mostly because they made the first one with the intention of following-up with a sequel before making the Avengers movie. So, it's not like they just decided to cash in on the franchise -- they're actually continuing the same story.

I always thought War Machine's armor was so much more hardcore than Iron Man's. It would be a crime NOT to include War Maching in the second movie.

Yes, yes. And also whoever they have for Captain America (Steven Colbert?) and Thor.... and *maybe* Hugh Jackman if the comic-book-nerds beg hard enough.

It was hinted at in the first movie that if there was a sequel War Machine would be in it. Because right as Stark went to fight Hammer, Rhodey looked at the silver armor and said "Next time, baby.".

Well they changed actors between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight (with Rachel) but I wouldn't say that that sequel sucked. :D

I've also heard that the Captain America movie and the Avengers movie are supposed to come out within a matter of weeks of each other. If that turns out to be the case, I'll be pretty pumped! I've also heard that John Cena may be playing Captain America. Now, sure he's got the look, but someone better get him some acting lessons first...

I could be wrong, but I thought he said "Next time, maybe." Obviously not a big deal, but it does change the 'flavor' of the line a bit...

And I believe Scarlett Johansson will be playing Black Widow, who is both a villain and a hero from time to time in the comic book world (someone with more knowledge feel free to correct me on this). So I'm curious to see which role she plays; especially since Mickey Rourke as Whiplash would provide a villain regardless.

So very true. But am I correct in saying that it is an exception and not the rule?

John Cena - Double true.

John Cena would be fine. Let's face it, we're talking about an action hero named "Captain America." Not exactly the deepest of roles.... Cena can handle it. But I'm still TOTALLY pulling for Steve. He deserves it more.
