The topic says it all. What is, word for word, a good example of the infamous "safety briefing" you guys use?

I'd like to hear the same thing because my field doesn't really have a safety brief. The ref just mentions the mask and says to turn on safety and barrel plug when you walk off the field. Personally I think they need a true safety briefing.

Here goes (for recballers in mind)

"Ok, guys, I'm going to be your ref today. As such, there are a couple of rules that I need you all to follow to make sure that everyone stays safe and has a good time. The number one rule, is to keep your goggles on! Period. Whenever we are past (insert point of reference here), the goggles never come off. Sometimes they will get uncomfortable, sometimes they may fog to the point where you can't see. Do not take them off, call me over to help you out.

Rule number two, is that whenever we are entering a place where people are not playing (also can insert reference point), put on your barrel sock. When it's done properly (demonstrate), this will prevent stray balls flying around. If goggles are off, barrel socks must be on.

Obviously, paintball involves running around. Be careful. There are holes, trenches, and different obstructions out there which could possibly hurt you if you aren't watching.

Everyone will be cronoed to ensure they are shooting under 300fps. There aren't any exceptions to that."

That's about what I do as far as safety.. I'll often do some tips on how to play and how the game will run, etc.. but thats my safety bit.

"Would you rather be blind for 15 minutes, or blind for the rest of your life?"

Finish your goggle bit about that. It gets them thinking.

Or lie and say this:

"I've seen someone get shot in the eye before. I won't go into details, but the sound he made...I've never heard it in my life. It was animal like. Well, I don't wanna see that ever again. So please, do not take your goggles off."

The first ones probably better.

And don't be afraid to take charge of situations. LAst week someguy had off field paint. So I tell him to dump it and keep playing the game, or call himself out and get to save it. He started giving me trouble and acting all tough. Im not a big kid, and this was a fairly large man. But I just stood my ground and stayed calm. Asserted my authority and asked if he'd rather I stop the game and go get the bigger refs to TAKE him off the field. He dumped his paint.

OH, your probably not gonna be doing a safety briefing for a while since your new. So listen to the more expeiranced refs.

i always use the 1eye guy rumor to help things out lolz

okies, also be expecting to read the rules and action dictated if players should violate those rules
for and exsample, if so and so has a full face violation (player takes off the mask, exsposing their entire face when enter a hot field paintballing area, the following penalty is player getting kicked off the field and being done for the day plus no refund yada yada
or player choose to use his own paint in rental equipment (for fields that allow BYOP bring your own paint fyi)
the player may loose his equipment and be done for the day yada yada
those were just exsamples, be you'll be reading similiar rules and violation codes

not to mention, you'll prolly be considered a shadow ref, and they'll appoint you a more experienced ref for you to listen and learn from

this is what i use for my saftey speach.

" alright guys listen up! im (insert name here) and im gona be your ref today. first off i want to stress that saftey is the upmost importance here so listen to the rules because if i have to repeat my self on the field twice were coming back down here to re do the saftey speech all over again slower because obvieously i would have gone to fast for you guys. you dont want that because it will take away from your playing time and i dont want that because i dont wana have to walk back down here... so heres the rules,
1. MASK STAYS ON AT ALL TIMES WHILE PLAYING! i cant stress this enough. if u think its safe to take your mask off look at me. if i have it on the you WILL have yours on. if i have to tell you more then twice to keep your mask down then your takeing a walk down to the rec center and u can have a talk with th owner about saftey, and if he sees u fit to come back out and play again hell cal me on the walkie talkie.
2.BARRELL BAgS STAY ON AT ALL TIMES WHILE NOT PLAYING! i dont wana loose my visions and neither do u.
3. FPS must be 285 or below.(veries on field) if i catch u n the field with it higher ill send u down to lower it. if i catch u again your gone for the day/weekend.
4. semi auto only( veries on field). if i catch you with anyhting else on your going down to talk to the big man at the rec center.
5. in case of an emrgency i will blow my whistle in 3 long bursts. i want you to imediatly drop to one knee put your gun on the ground next to you, and put your hand on your knees like so( show your hands overlaping on your nee cap. KEEP YOUR MASK ON!
6. NO CHEATING! if i catch u once im puling you u. 2nd time i leave it up to your fellow players, 3rd time u take the long walk to talk to the boss man.
7. NO SHOOTING UP OR DOWN FLOORBOARDS OR CRACKS!!! its completly unsafe and can casuse a mask to come flying off.
8. NO BLIND FIREING! too shoot at your enemy you must see your enemy. not ok i see him stick my gun out take three shots wait a few seconds then check again. if you caught once ill warn ya. 3nd time i pull you from the game 3rd time the owner makes the decision if you are unsafe to the players and me.
9. NO PHYSICAL CONTACT. if u hti someone on purpose the police will be called and you will be detained until they get here, and we will file charges.
10. FIELD PAINT ONLY(yet again veries on field). if i catch you with off field paint your done, no second chances, you will leave the field and u may return in a week. do it again and well see u next lifetime.
11. have fun. not haaving fun will force me to take servere messures that might involve shirtless matches, 2 on 10s and so on and so forth(this one is obviesly fake but u can use it if u want)
OK so lets get ready to have some fun. REMEMBER GUYS play safe, and if i have to tell more the 2 of u about the mask rule 2 times then we come back down here and i willgo over over this spech again and u will be ested that time on the rules.now lets get ready to play"

oh yea

no playing favoritism

if you display any form of favoritism, it's most likely you'll get banned/fired/or suspended from being a ref

Thanks for the info guys. I could see this "shadow ref" idea, but the thing is, the field is new, and is opening on the 15 of Nov. I have no clue who'll be there, but hopefully there is someone experienced.

Welcome to "Insert the name of the paintball field where you work". We have two main rules that you must follow. If you do not, I will yell at you. It is not that I am a jerk or a big meany. These are the most important rules that we have.

You will all have a paintball mask. While you are on the field, you must wear the mask at all times. You can not lift it up, or take it off for any reason while you are on the field. You also have a bag that will go on the end of the barrel. (If a person has their own marker, I will notice to see if they have a plug and mention that as well.) Before you leave the field, and the entire time you are off the field, that bag must be on the end of your barrel. It does not come off for any reason whatsoever.

The reason that these rules are so important is that the paintball markers that you are using are shooting at about 280 feet per second. A football field is 300 feet long. So in one second a paintball is going to travel almost the length of a football field. If you do not have your mask on while on the field, or you do not have your barrel bag on while off the field, and you get hit in the eye, it can shoot your eye out of your head. You will never see out of that eye again. So mask on on the field, barrel bags on off the field. This is a three strikes rule. First time I catch you breaking it, I will simply yell at you. The second time, I will yell at you and you will sit out a game. If there is a third time, not only will I yell at you, but you will be done playing paintball for the rest of the day. Do you all understand these rules?

Now, with the scary stuff out of the way, when you are hit by a paintball that breaks upon you, you will be out. There are three things that you must do, 1) Call out that you are "HIT" or "OUT" as loud as you can. You are telling everyone on the field that you are out, and you also yelling loud enough that it can be heard over the freeway traffic. (We are right next to a freeway, the fields themselves are about 60 or so feet away). 2) You will raise your free hand, not the one holding the paintball marker, up in the air. 3) The third thing you will do is to get up from where you are, and go to the Dead Box. Now I am sure you all are wondering exactly what a Dead Box is. If you look at the field right behind you, you will see that there is a set of boards on the top of the field, and at the bottom of the field. (The field is a speedball inflatable field, so it is easy to see said boards.) Those of you that are playing on field two (Or the Urban Field), the boards are located on the near side, by the entrance, and on the far side, away from the entrance.

When the game starts, you will be on the inside of the field, your barrels touching the boards. Three, two, one, you come out shooting. Now, when you are hit, you go behind the boards, they will act as a shield and protect you from getting any more hits than you already have.

If a paintball hits you and bounces off, it does not count. You are still in.

If a paintball hits your marker, it does not count, you are still in.

If you are hit, and you are not sure whether the paintball broke or not, or you have any marker problems, for those of you with rentals, stay where you are, call for "PAINT CHECK" and I will come to you. Do not call out "Hey Ref", it sounds like Jeff, and I do not know who Jeff is. Also, stay in your bunker. Do not stand out in the open and try to wave me over. I can tell by looking in the eyes of each of you that you are here to shoot other people, and if any of you see someone standing out in the open, you will shoot them, most likely light them up like a Christmas tree. So stay in your bunker.

(I then show them the safety on the Rentals, Tippmann 98's, and the the bolt, so should they shoot and nothing happens, they can recock the marker themselves instead of wasting my time with a paint check for something that simple.)

Do not pick up any paintballs off the ground. They are wet and they are dirty. Being dirty, they will get the dirt in the marker, gum up the works, and then there is nothing that I can do to help you out with getting it up and running. Being wet, they get bigger, they go only so far into the feedneck and stop. You are shooting, nothing is coming out, and you have all of these paintballs in the hopper. It is frustrating. Don't pick up paintballs off of the ground.

Do not blindfire. If you can not see what you are shooting, do not pull the trigger. (I then give a couple of examples of blindfiring.)

You will have to raise your barrel to shoot from one side of the field to the other. This is okay. Just don't raise your barrel so high that your paintballs go flying up and over the netting, hitting any people standing and watching the game, any cars that are parked, the Church (Which is about 40 feet away from one of the fields) or any traffic driving by on the freeway.

Last rule for you, if you are playing on field one (Airball field), we have a 20 foot Surrender or Die rule. When you get to 20 feet from a person on the other team, you must stop immediately, do not go any further, and yell "Surrender or Die!". The other person has two choices, 1) Call themselves out, or 2) anything else. If the person chooses number 2, then they are free game. You can shoot them from 20 feet, and at 20 feet, any hit will sting. You can also move closer to them and shoot them. At 20 feet, they sting, at 6 inches, they downright hurt.

If you are on field two (Urban field), if you find that there is a person from the next bunker away from you, you can not move any closer to them. You must shoot them out from your bunker. You can move to other bunkers, if more of you are around, you can even surround that person, but you can not move any closer to that person at all. The one and only exception involves the use of grenades. If you have a grenade, you keep your marker pointed at the ground, and you can move closer to the bunker and throw the grenade. If any paint from a grenade gets on anyone, that person is out, no matter how much or how little. You can also take out more than one person in a bunker, if they get any paint on them.

Are there any questions?

Just as reference, at the beginning of the year, I worked at a woods field, and I got a call on my cell phone. It was the shop calling to let me know that I needed to get to field 1 as soon as possible. It seems that someone got shot in the eye. Specifically, he was off the field, and his buddy, who was actually the ref for the walk-ons, shot a marker against the netting at him. The paintball ripped the netting open and hit his buddy in the eye. Guess who got to be the ambulance and take the kid to the hospital? Yep, I have had to deal with trying to keep the kid's mind off of what happened while I drove him to the hospital. Which was at least 20 minutes away...

I played with my youth group last Sunday and it is mostly girls. These girls did not know anything about guns in generall so I would point out how to fire if needed and the difference in markings for each team and give a few basic tips to begginers because I thought it was helpful when a ref gave me advice right before the breakout on my first game.
