This video was ACTUALLY made by the bad guys.

http://s269.photobuc...nt=Oopsjoel.flv

The cameraman is filming his friend as he praises Allah and launches mortar shots at American troops.

He doesn't know the new mortar shell tracking technology can track the trajectory of a hostile round and fire a retaliatory shot to precisely the spot from which the hostile shell was fired.

This only requires the Hostile Mortar to fire 2 to 3 rounds.

Count the number of mortar rounds the masked insurgent fires in the video.

See how well it works. If you listen carefully you can hear the single round from the American artillery fired in the distance.

It comes just after the terrorist fires his third round - and his fourth round drops down the tube but that's as far as it gets.

Nope, We got computers to mortar them right back. Except we're, you know, accurate.

Sort of...

It *did* but because it was set off by the incoming fire/explosion, not by itself like a malfunction.

Speaking of which, we now have the ability to drop guided 81mm mortars from aircraft.

Imagine a Reaper loaded with dozens and dozens of mortar shells. You now have an airframe that can stay on station for over half a day at a time, providing accurate close-air support. Now we don't have to drop a million dollar Helfire to kill two insurgents.

That works for precision strikes and assassination-type stuff.

I'm talking close air support. Eliminating snipers, machine-gun nests and the like.

I definitely see the usefulness of those.

Good to hear we're no longer constrained to extremely expensive overkill shots.

The Taliban might want to rethink their recruitment videos.

Every chance we get to utilize older munitions in a modern employment method is a big win. There's loads of cold war explosives sitting around, it'd be criminal not to use them. This? This idea is awesome. Reaper drones are out there making it all look easy.

Do you have any proof? Because I've seen this video under the title "Terrorist Blows Himself Up With Faulty Mortar." That's certainly what appears to be hsppening.

I'm not saying you're lying, just that was the pretense on which I first saw this video.
