My friend is deciding on whether to buy an A-5 or an MR-2. I personally think A-5 all the way. What do you think?

The stock IMO on the mr2 is the worst in the industry. very uncomfortable. The A5 is more $'s but better all round marker I think.
If you add the cost of an auto hopper to the MR2 I think your friend will reconsider.

Out of those two choices I'd have to go with the A5. It's tougher and more reliable.

Definately the A5! I have not ever owned a Spyder, however I have seen them have catastrophic failures over the years that I have been playing. And well, Tippmann.........Its a Tippmann, thats all you need to know. They are kinda like a Rolex, it takes a beating and keeps on a ticking. I currently own three Tippmanns, and my son owns a Tippmann. I can't imagine owning anything else, unless sometime in the future the ultimate paintball gun is released for sale, you know...the one that runs forever on a tank and never runs out of paintballs. Oh and hits everything its aimed at. Later,

Yeah. Well there will probably never be a paintball gun that runs forever on a single tank and hits everything it is pointed at regardless of range. So don't worry about it never running out of paintballs.

I'd say the A-5, because it's a mech marker, meaning no batteries to worry about, and likely easier maintenance (I've never opened either gun, but the A-5 is supposed to be alot like the 98, which is pretty easy). Plus, the MR2's stock, as previously stated, is weird. If you're going for an MR, get an MR3, at least the stock feels better. Plus it looks a bit nicer than the MR2 IMO. But that's about as far as the differences go (other than a different sight rail/iron sight).
