Okay, boyz, I just set down to read your massive amount of feedback on the Officer Test. Whew.
First of all, writing a test like that is way (WAY) more difficult than you probably imagine. And, there's no possible way to avoid bias.
If there's one thing I know in this life, it's paintball. However, my experience is limited to a mere thousand or so games over twenty years played on a hundred or so different fields. In a nutshell, my experience differs from everyone elses.
So, I wrote a test that would NOT rate someone's expertise as a paintball player. Rather, it would rate a player's knowledge of the SpecOps way. Throughout the website, we've set forth the manner of play that is working for us. There are a bunch of intrinsic biases to our approach. Here are a few:
1. We play woodsball and we do it on true woodsball fields. We didn't attempt to discuss or teach speedball, hyperball or tourneyball tactics. For starters, I don't know enough about tourneyball to fill a good-sized post-it note. However, this also applies to woods-style fields that really are more like speedball fields. For example, if you can see all the way across your field and watch what everyone else is doing all the time, you're probably on more of a speedball-style field than a woods field (according to our definition.)
2. We play as a team. We are firm believers in team woodsball whenever possible. Coordinated play is a lot different than individual play and our test has a huge bias in favor of team play.
3. We believe in specialization of equipment and position. Our test shamelessly promotes the notion of exploiting of equipment and gear advantages.
There are many more biases built into the test, but these are just a couple. In short, all the info printed around the website give the answers to the test. Like the man said, if you feverishly poured over the site and read every word, you probably did fabulously on the test.
If you're an experienced paintballer with your own way of doing things, your biases and mine probably clashed a bit.
In any case, GIVE ME A FREAKING BREAK!! You try writing a fifty question test about paintball!! It's way harder than you'd think.
I'm glad you all enjoyed it (to one degree or another.) Do you have any suggestions for tests in the future? Maybe, tests you can take for commendations or points?
Now that we have the test database engine built, it'll be much easier to make new ones. Give me some ideas!
