Some of us younger guys were blathering on about it (apocalypse) at work the other day. A few kept talking about how easy they would have it. Delusional amateurs. Like they will the only idiots looting the county. It got around to me.

"Me, I'd be "FILTERED"ed." They got a chuckle from that. Most of them don't know about my hobbies. One dude (who's on the list of guys to track down if "FILTERED" goes down) looked at me funny kinda though, he actually knows about the survival kit I have in the Jeep. And since my rifles are the background image on my phone, he's seen them too.

Although it's funny when they take that at face value when my nickname is "The Knife Rack" and I actually have weapons on hand (and more in the Jeep). Many talk like they're going to walk all the way home without any kind of weapon, or they'll buy a gun on the way home. If the NICS system is down, only guys with CC permits will legally be able to buy firearms, because if it really goes nuts, people will probably be in denial about it for a little while. And how many people carry the cash to buy a gun? If the power or banking systems are down, they're boned.

I always get a kick out of the wannabees. yes they have most of the idea right, but thats where it stops. They are the people to look out for. they know just enough to under stand that when crap hits the fan, they'll be coming to you for "help". Talk about zombies... when that guy gets hungry enough, he'll do anything to feed his family and himself.

I hear people talk that smack all the time and how government is going to fall and come after them. Maybe their right, maybe not...cant say one way or the other just yet. But one thing that shuts them up pretty fast is " You do know you'll have to kill people to protect yourself. And I'm not talking zombie like creatures, I'm talking your neighbors, school "friends", cops. Anyone and everyone will be only thinking about their own group."

To see the look on their faces after that is almost priceless. But hey, whoever said "the end" would be easy...

i never hear it ... everyone around me is in total denial and thinks i am certifiably nuts for even thinking about it, let alone discussing it. i dont know that it would get like what you are describing for a while, governing structures would have to completely fall into anarchy and chaos for that to happen, and by then, most of the people who are going to really have a chance to get along would have left. As far as all the killing of friends and neighbors, i don't believe that will be as casual as you state it either. at some point, if someone comes to your "compound" for help, do you turn them away, or do you add them ? after a while you will get big enough to have to have some rules and laws and enforce them. you will have to weigh a persons ability to help the "group" as opposed to being a burden. where do you draw the line ... pregnant wives, small children, someone who may have sustained an injury and is no longer of use as far as helping, someone with a medical condition such as diabetes that cannot get meds... no matter what the size of the group; large or small; there will be social conditions and issues and decisions to be made for survival .... do you just take them out and "off" them .. let them slowly starve, waste a precious round of ammunition ? what if one of the injured ones is your mother or father, or you ?

What does that say to the group if life is treated in such a cavalier way ?

Community is a big part of survival. No man is an island. Betwwen my family, and my employer, I have access to hundreds of contacts I can take advantage of if needed.

I can't fix cars to save my life, but another cook I work with was a mechanic in the navy in the 80s. He's a genius when it comes to fixing "FILTERED". I have a cousin who contacts as a mechanic for the National Guard and was a dealership mechanic for years and years. My uncles and pops are handy with older style engines. So I can find people to help.

I am passable at basic to moderate first aid. In a pinch, I'm confident I could manage an emergency tracheotomy. Past that, not so much. I'm on good terms with the Paramedics and EMTs I work with. If my family or I need help, they'll make sure we get taken care of.

I have a few very marketable skills. I am an expert when it comes to food. I can hunt, trap, kill, dress, butcher, cook, and preserve any vegetable or animal you put in front of me. I can grow most foods compatible with my climate zone, and my "neighbor" is a long time farmer who grew up with my dad. I could get help from him, in exchange for keeping an eye on his fields (which I already do). Show me someone who doesn't eat, and I'll show you a corpse.

I am damn good with a gun. Particularly a handgun. I can teach anyone who is willing to learn, with just about any weapon they have available. I can even manage basic troubleshooting. I have quite a bit of ammo on hand, especially 7.62x39. A LOT of folks have that in SKSs around here. A valuable trade commodity. And of course the ubiquitous 12 gauge an .22.

I can't be or do everything, but I have a network of people that can do almost anything.

On another note, I got the Hellcat today. Sister says I look homeless when I wear it. Good sign. But HOLY BALLS that thing holds a lot of "FILTERED", and I only got the medium. I'm not even close to having her full yet, though getting my Czech surplus sleeping bag in the compartment took some work. Need to get a hammock, bug net, and some good ponchos/nylon tarps for a stronger shelter.

so what form of governing will you have in your "group" ? a democracy, a dictatorship, some type of communist community thing, ... what works best ? might makes right ? the meek shall inherit the earth ? ... does that mean the leftovers, .... or what exactly is gonna be left to handover to whom ?

It's not going to be one big conglomerate. If I need something, I'll contact someone I know with the appropriate skill set. I'll make it worth their while. Not too different from how we do it now.

You sir are people I'll be on the look out for. Smart, adaptive and you take charge and responsibility. No one person had one particular job...sure some are better at one thing than another, but everyone can do everything. Everyone takes care of one another, everyone is "in charge" of situations. No one person is left to be the fall guy, no single man rules over another...hence our current waning government ( actually, our governments former democracy image is waning, but our current government * cough..communistic..cough* is rapidly growing ). Its hard to find people like you.

Anyways was going through some oldish photos and came across this. This is the tepee that me and my two brothers built ( out of 20 foot trees and rag weed ) when we spent a week running fence for our boss out in the middle of Georgia swamp. my older brother was testing out a setting on the camera, and he just shot this to see what it would look like...talk about luck :) I wish I could get rid of the time/date stamp though

Cool. I'll be the salty sniper on the roof with a cooler of beer and a mouth like a drunk sailor.

Got some rifles that need scoping.

I ain't got all the new fancy sniper gear, but considering what snipers did in 'nam with hunting rifles, I think I can manage.

Dude, as you well know, gear is only half of it. When it comes to shooting that is. Dont get me wrong, optics are really important, but you just gotta have skill.
