So I was watching the sci fi channel last night, and they had this show called Human Guinea Pig. They basically beat the crap outa this poor guy. So in this episode, they pepper spray him, tazer him, pepperball him, and rubber bullet/pepperball him.

So a couple things here. If you see the show its pretty good.

1) No mask - granted this would change the affect of the pava pepper, and there are specialist cops shooting him
2) Gun is shooting 346 FPS. I saved you some math. So it is hotter than we play.
3) They said the pepper balls have a thicker shell, so it probably would hurt more.

In the show they show pictures of his bruises which look really nasty.

So lets open it up for discussion.

Paintball gun, paintball type projectiles, paintballlooking setup.... Maybe that's why.

Also, for training they should use masks, but for shooting bad guys, you get what you get.

I was wondering how long it would be before a thread like this popped up on here......

I am licensed, in the State of Texas, to legally carry a pepperball launcher. 'Tis a long, arduous process, but I had to get it done for work. One of the requirements to get the license, is you have to be shot with a pepperball. The launcher I was shot with was chrono'ed at 335-365. I was shot once in the chest. I can attest to several things. One of them is, being a paintball player, the shell of a pepperball is a lot harder than that of a paintball. Even though I was shot from 10' away and wore a military issue ACU top, it left a welt on my chest like I had been shot from 5' away without a top on. I was slightly winded from a single shot based solely off of the impact.

I just saw that clip we are talking about last night.

Do they tell you to avoid trying to shoot at the face?

Yep. We are told to aim for the chest. They said that the shot will only be pulled down by gravity, so worst case scenario, someone gets the wind knocked out of them.

I was curious about that. I was looking it up and they were saying that pepperballs could be used for crowd control from quite a distance, and I know that paintball guns are not that accurate.

it's a crowd. how accurate do you have to be? that's like, "your aim is so bad you could'nt hit the ground if you tried!"

That's because a direct pepperball break upon a person is not necessary for the contents of the pepperball to disperse after breakage. A powdery vapor cloud disperses a few feet around the point of breakage. The balls could break on cars, walls, or the ground and the contents will still disperse. There is a psychological benefit to actual impact upon a person, (like rubber bullet deterrents) but the major benefit of the ball is chemical dispersal from a distance. Since the ball is designed to break upon some impact, it is not going to be thrown back at crowd control like traditional tear gas or other chemical agent canisters have been. In a confined area, pepperballs offer a more controlled and measured method of chemical crowd control.

I didn't mean hit the crowd, I meant more along the lines of not hitting somebody in the eyes.

The subject of pepperballs has been beaten to death. Fact is, they're not safe under any circumstances, and even rubber bullets would probably be more safe because they're a more precise weapon. Paintball guns are inherently inaccurate weapons, as is any projectile that's fired out of them. You cannot, in good faith, fire one of these things into a crowd and expect no one to get seriously hurt. Even if you aim low, it may wing high, or wing to the left or right. And then you've got a problem. Teargas canisters are a far more effective and safer way of dispersing a crowd.
