...And you don't need 200 yds for home defense.. If you have to shoot someone at anyone near that range, it's clearly not home defense, it's going to be considered murder.. lol :)

...Rifles are good tools, but range is somewhat overrated in most instances. My Mosin could probably connect for many hundreds of yards, but if I shot a guy that far out, it'd be all bur impossible to prove that as self-defense. Even if you blew a guys face off at 50 yards, how can you prove he was a clear and imminent threat unless there is a rifle on his body too. And how often are you gonna have a rifle on you at the same time a guy trying to shoot you is?

Well, I hate to dredge this up again, but maybe I can explain myself a little.
I'm not saying I'm going to go all sniper and be picking people off at ranges where they will generally pose no threat.
It's just that I'm about 90% biased towards rifles- they've always been my first weapon of choice, and given the versatility of the current AR market, imo the best choice for just about anything. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with using other types of firearm that are going to be just as effective in a defensive use- I just think that by making a rifle my go-to weapon, I cut down on any disadvantages I may (however likely or unlikely) run up against. Again, it's just personal preference.

Thats what I was thinking. If I do end up scraping up cash for this M&P15 then I think I may want to get a rifle or full length handguard(i think those are the right terms) because I'm pretty sure the one on there is carbine length. If its a full length one then I could still use the front sights I would think but I didnt know how that worked out with the gas block. I didnt know it was lal one piece since I've seen a bunch of gas blocks without the sight so I assumed they were two separate units.

Worry no more- Daniel Defense makes a couple great rail systems that allow you to work around a standard front sight.
Here: DD Rail 1
And here:DD Rail 2
This is what #1 would look like mounted:DD M4V1
Also, as you can see if you look at the rest of the rail systems, #1 also comes as "M4" and "Omega" variations, as well as 'carbine' and 'mid' lengths

How could I have forgot to mention this earlier...
Well, anyway, a big +1 here. That whole site is a really great resource, and I hope he keeps adding to it.

Aside from the links here, see also his "Go Shoot the Gun" and "Basic Carbine Build". The five of these should be required reading for new AR owners... Or at least I wish I'd found them sooner. :(

People who say anything is possible never tried to slam a revolving door!!
There is no problem that cannot be solved with the proper application of explosives and duct tape.
How's that for a contradiction?

The gas tube pins into the gas block which aligns with the gas passage hole that leads from the bore of the barrel. Some barrels have holes drilled in differing locations designating where the gas block will be pinned to the barrel. Carbine, mid, and rifle length ate the three basic gas tube lengths. Longer forearms can go on barrels equipped with shorter gas tubes but in most cases the A2 gas block/sight tower has to be replaced with a low profile gas block that fits under the forearm. Some companies such as Daniel Defense, GG&G, and A.R.M.S. do have railed forearms that fit on barrels equipped with A2's but they tend to be expensive.

Samson for Carbine

Both require the barrel to be removed but still use the A2 front site

ADD: Just caught up on the thread. Damn I'm slow.
