Anyway, I want to hear your thoughts on this, maybe start a small debate. Not a formal one, state a point, and then reject someone else's with complete ownage. Lets go.

Random starting point: What separates you from the bears? What makes them worth more? The fact they have fewer numbers, and you are more replaceable than them.

not really up for a debate, but more for general info:

its good that they are making a comeback. shows that some of the programs are working.

their numbers reflect on the ecosystem as a whole. its an overall balance on how things work. bigger numbers, better system in theory.

on the numbers thing, its not about value to me, its the fact that their numbers are so low...due to humans. our actions many years ago have wiped out or almost wiped out many species of animal in many places. while some may not matter, it can cause damage in any ecosystem and the effects can be big or small. and its just human nature to try and make up for our huge faults and mistakes.

now there are some animals, like the panda, that we just cant help. those things wont even "make whoopie" with each other. what do ya do?

But why protect them? What's the reason other than tourism? Other than because their dying? It's not like their doing anything important to the ecosystem.

Carry a bear gun. A rifle if at all possible. You get attacked by a grizzly, kill it. You don't, leave it the FRAG alone. What is the point of this debate?

Bears should be preserved at all costs. When the humans are dead, who else will battle the zombie hordes?

Honestly, I don't see much point in carrying a "bear gun." In my experiences with bears, they aren't exactly all that deadly. I literally almost ran into one on my bike one time (My fault, came around a corner too quickly, not making noise so it didn't hear me coming) and we both just stared at each other a bit then both took off.

Bear hunting itself is pointless and stupid. Some of the stories I have hear from people who have gone solidify my position in my mind.

What About Brown Bear, LoD?

This.

When traveling in bear country, have a means of useful defense.

For this, I say absolute minimum (to the point of "I don't think this is good enough" ) of a .44 magnum revolver. Better yet is a .454 Casull or .460 S&W.

A shotgun loaded with a slugs may work well, and the best of all is a rifle of sufficient caliber.

First of all, none of us are referring to bear hunting. That's another thing in of itself. While I have no problem with bear hunting, please bring something that will do the job the first time. You don't want to piss one of those things off.

And just because you ran into a single bear is hardly reason to say there's no point in carrying a bear gun.

There are plenty of documented reasons to carry a bear gun. Quite a few cases of people either out in the woods hiking, camping, or in some cases hunting other animals (such as deer) and encountered a bear who attacked. Whether the bear was hungry, felt a threat to its cubs, or was just angered by who knows what, doesn't matter to me.

If you're attacked by a bear, you shoot it.

There's been enough bear attacks to warrant thinking of it as a possibility when in bear country.
