Well that sucks, (and sorry to rag on you so much) but the steps you took, were very dangerous. Even if you did only have the asa open for about a 1/2 second, there would have still been a chance of failure. For example, say for some reason your asa failed, then air would have leaked into your air chamber slowly (or quickly) filling it past its limit and BOOM...

What you need is a regulator, and a pop safety valve, combined with a bigger air chamber.

Well that sounds like a safe and effective way of controlling pressure.

Your mistakes so you and others may learn:
1. PVC without a regulator/blow-off.
2. Assuming you knew about volumes/pressures of CO2.
3. Having a poor-at-best method of pressure control.

Alright, here's a calculation that i don't quite get, that shows about how much pressure a 12 gram put into your pipe
(stolen off a different website)

(12/1.8)*(61.02/23.87)*(14.7) = 250 PSI.

Well above anything i would put into PVC. It may say 300 or so PSI, but it's still a lot of pressure. Plus your incredibly unsafe methods of using a 9oz, it's a wonder you weren't seriously injured.

Glad you're alright man

I recommend never using PVC with CO2. As you let the gas expand that quickly, it rapidly cools, which can change the inner microstructure of the polymers making up the pipe, leading to failure. Even at low pressures this can still happen.

If you make a homemade LAW, any part that holds pressure should always, always be made of pressure-rated metal pipe. Anything else is just asking for trouble

if you are useing co2 or hpa use metal pipe if you are using compressed air from a home air compressor it doesn't matter as log as it is preasure rated

i have no idea what pvc pipe. the pressure rating was over 350 psi at 73 degrees. and i have no idea, i think the glue just broke and the pressure made it blow off. i used pvc cement. but it was really scary because my wrist bled like crazy, my legs bled, and my finger blew up twice its size

You idiot. One, PVC cement requires at least 12 hours, preferably a day to set correctly. Two, you dumped 800 PSI into a 350 PSI vessel...REPEATEDLY!

Next time, get a regulator and some properly rated pipe. Did you even read the full guides, or just look at the pictures?

This is why I always have an all metal construction with the exception of the barrel on any launcher built to be charged with a 12 gram or bigger tank. The only time pressure rated PVC is used is with a regulated source that gives lots of space for the Co2 to properly expand. A remote line, the regulator, and then 25' of air hose.

Well, glad your ok. But, but the pics didn't look that bad. When I built a room in my basement it was about the same results. Or a regular day of paintball.
Hope you have learned something.

it's all been said...but Jackson summed it up best: i'm glad you're okay, but that was really, really, REALLY stupid.

guys, anyone who attempts to build a homemade LAW needs to do calculations to see how much they can put into their expansion chamber. don't do the calculations, and this is just a taste of what can happen.

flo, please, don't try to build another one of these, you got lucky this time. also, if your expansion chamber was 1 1/2 inches, what was the diameter of the barrel?

dude, i built it on thursday, let everythin set until yesterday to test it. so dont say anything about it not being dried or set

you should have had a pressure gauge in it to prevent things like that.

and sorry, that sounds like it hurt. :P

Pinned for now and will be moved to the safety section later.

Good luck healing. Hopefully there's no permanent damage.

I am no longer going to continue building my LAW after this.

thanks puz. the only thing that might be permanent is the dead skin on my leg. i thought it was a safe design. it comes to show that good designs are bad and if you dont know what your doing, its worse
