This event is an alternative history to a ten day NATO command post exercise conducted in 1983… It is considered by many historians to be the closest the world has come to nuclear war…

With President Ronald Reagan taking the oath of office in January of 1981, the politics of the Cold War began to take a much darker turn. Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Deterrence was an idea of the past; one that had not only resulted in the largest arms race in human history but struck fear into the hearts of all peoples.
Operation: Able Archer 83 was launched on November 2nd, 1983 as one of the largest ‘simulated’ military exercises in history. Able Archer spanned the globe as psychological operations near Soviet airspace in the Pacific made radar operators nervous. While Europe endured ‘mock’ alert statuses, as well as increased DEFCON levels.
The exercise, according to the military brass at the Pentagon as well as numerous CIA agents was suppose to end quietly on November 11th, ten days after it started. History however, tells us otherwise…
On November 8th 1983, a false alarm, caused by an error in the Soviet Early Warning System (Oko), detected the launch of two American Pershing II IRBM’s from West Germany. At the same time, an unknown civilian aircraft crossed into Soviet airspace over the Kamchatka peninsula triggered hysteria from within the soviet military. Soviet premiere Yuri Andropov was being treated for renal failure when the alarm was raised and was not informed of the quickly escalating situation.
Soviet radar operators, watched the false alarm from within their bunker at the Serpukhov-15 command post outside Moscow, not knowing the error in their system would cost the world dearly. Communications intercepted from Serpukhov-15 to the ICBM facilities in Kapustin Yar indicated the launch of a SS-17 ‘Spanker’ at approximately 12:35 PM local time.
The NATO early warning systems did their job in alerting the West German people of an incoming Soviet missile. However, it was not enough. Failure on the part of the West German government as well as poorly led NATO civilian evacuation plans caused the loss of life to be high… At 12:58 PM, the Soviet SS-17 landed a direct hit on the Bundestag Parliament building in Bonn.
Subsequent missile launches from unknown sites across the Soviet Union destroyed American Pershing II missile sites in Western Europe… Sporadic skirmishes have broken out between the East-West German border…
