Hey everyone, I just was volunteered to captain a new team. Our first practice is in a couple weeks, and I would really like to learn strengths/weaknesses of each of them. Also, most of them are pretty new and don't really know what position they would like to play. Does anyone know of some drills or exercises that could help me out?

Just have them play against another group and see who does what naturally. Seriously, most players subconsciously will do what comes naturally to them once you get them comfortable.

The other idea is to make everyone try everything and see who does the best at certain things, though as a team captain I'm more fond of the "organically" developed positions.

Exactly. There is no 'drill' to see how a player naturally plays the game. Any time I start coaching a new team (Soccer, Football, Hockey), I just split the teams up and have them play for a while. Don't set a score or time limit, you'll know when you're done. Take notes on each player, commenting on strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies that player has (do they always run left, shoot out of one side of the bunker, overslide, etc).
My job is to be an asshole. I excel at the position.
