story
Essentially customs is trying to redefine a switchblade, this will basically cause any folding knife that you could possibly open with one hand to be illegal. might want to take a look

Ok, I read some of the U.S. Customs document, and there, you can find dozens of rulings by the bureau which they state knives which can be opened via thumbs studs and the like would NOT fall under the purposed restrictions. In fact, the the board stated a series of CRKT knives that give a light spring assist when opened by a thumb stud, would not fall under the new restriction. The redefinition seems to be targeting knives that are designed to skirt around the switchblade law by forcing the user to partially opening the blade manually, say a quarter of the way open, before a powerful spring assist takes over.

Stupid. I can open my non-assisted knives just as fast as any auto. It's not like auto knives are some completely different super deadly thing

Saw this on another forum. They want to make a deal out of folders, I'll carry a damned KA-BAR. THEN let's hear them whine.

What about a halberd? Are there restrictions on those? :dodgy:

No, as long as it doesn't have an adjustable staff, you'll be fine. Oh, and the halberd must be at least 12 ft in length or it'll be classified as an SSH--short-staffed halberd, and you'll be sent to 20 years hard labor in the acid mines of Virikas.

Well, I think part of the problem is that switchblades have very little use other than to kill and maim. Most other knives can be used to strip wires, whittle, be used as an impromptu screwdriver etc. Switchblades and balisongs were designed as fighting knives. So the only reason you'd be carrying one is to fight....

^^^^^ Cesar, thats the most sense ive heard in a while.

seriously. they want to restrict everythng to the point where law abiding citizens either turn criminal themselves, or are left defenseless. I mean, i have carried a knife since i was old enough to know not to cut myself with it. Ive carried everything from autos to a mini Kukri. Just because a knife opens when u push a button dont make it the damned nuclear bomb of the edged weapons world. Hell, i can open my Smith an Wesson SWAT just as fast as any automatic. and just cuz it opens fast dont make it a WMD. Id be more scared of a guy swingin a K BAR at me than some pocket knife. and whats the point? I can beat a mans skull in with my fists. U gonna cut my hands off? I can beat a guy to death with a stick. U gonna level all the forests? I can crack someone over the head with a rock. U gonna blast all the rocks off the face of the planet? Its gotta stop somewhere, or people are just gonna get tired of it and not listen.

I freakin love Balisongs......just how they look and operate, tho. And i can use it and an auto for the same task as any other knife.

I'll just carry one of my 2 bayonets, or my jungle machete.

;)

besides, i think it is rather silly, this suggestion to ban certain types of folders, when most of the folders in my experience doesnt need springs to assist, as gravity and inertia after i thumb it open kicks in. in fact, i have a folding box knife, had a wicked looking folding gerber field knife, am planning to get some other folders that i can use around the camp sites in addition to my field knives and bayonets and ax and entrenching tool.

*Sigh* Yes, but the blade is not designed for chopping, or long periods of cutting. Balisongs are not utility knives. The blade is designed for stabbing people.
