The 7.62x39 round has good stopping power, but it's very poorly suited to accurate fire or range. I understand fully why they went to 5.x calibers. The smaller rounds are accurate and effective out to 550-600 yards, versus around 200 for the 7.62x39 round. Immediate stopping power against a point-blank target may suffer, but you get a much more versatile and accurate weapon. If they want more lethality in any ammunition, they can always do what they did with the 7N1 and 7N14 sniper ammunition for the Dragunov. This steel core ammo has a hollow area inside it, and a lead knocker. On impact, the lead knocker moves into the hollow and destabilizes the bullet, resulting in it keyholing (tumbling) inside whatever you hit. VERY nasty stuff.
