I have a question.

Today I bought a snazzy new iPod touch. I'm having some trouble transferring my songs from my old iPod to the new one. I've got the songs from my current library on it, but my other songs will not drag and drop.

I'd appreciate a little help, please and thanks.

You can't get songs off your old iPod using iTunes.

If you goto http://www.kennettnet.co.uk - download their Music Rescue program, it will transfer the songs off your old iPod.

Please do not use this for illegal file sharing.
The reason I can recommend this program above any other of similar type, is because I helped work on it for 4 months, while it was still called PodUtil, on top of creating the new website which you'll see (although it's had a few cosmetic changes since I left over two years ago!) and did tech/customer support. ^^;

If you like it, buy it! Or not... y'know... it's your choice. LOL. But it is free to use, you'll just get a pop-up every 10 songs I think.

Yup, download the program, install it, plug your older iPod in.

Music Rescue will recognize it and give your music list.
Just tell it where you want your music copied to on your computer, and then there should be a START or COPY button, something of that nature, I believe it's in the lower right of the Music Rescue main window.

Will it work on a PC? Also, what do you mean "popup every 10 songs"?

Yup, it'll work on a PC or a Mac.

What'll happen, if you use the free version - every 10 songs it copies to your PC, it'll popup with a dialog box, basically saying "If you like this, please consider buying it." - and it'll have a OK click box so then Music Rescue will continue to copy your songs.

It's kinda annoying, but if you're only going to be doing this once... you may as well tough it out and not pay, it's not required of you.

Yeah it's a lot of fun to play with, even if you're not listening to music or anything.

Don't you just LOVE how Apple locks up your music and won't even let you transfer your tunes?

Yup, especially considering that the ones you legitimately pay for are so hard to copy.

While I do think that many of Apple's practices are unnecessary, I'll still buy their stuff because I like it. Plus, there's always a way around it, if you look hard enough.

Guys, you have to look at it like this...

You buy music from iTunes, and you put it on your iPod.

You then technically have two copies of your music, with the option to burn it all to CD after that, too.
It's not exactly a restricting practice there.

I mean, it's not as if you can only have it in one place... but no, you can't just go plug your iPod into anyones computer and put all your music there. It's to prevent illegal file sharing.

That's why companies like KennettNet can actually make money, is by going around iTunes and pulling your music off of your iPod. It's not labeled for file sharing, rather it is a restoration in a worst-case scenario of you breaking your CDs and hard drive.

As far as I'm concerned, Apple has one of better DRM's in the music world.
