Just FYI: You can shoot SCUBA tanks (standard Al, we'd never waste a steel) with a 5.56 and it won't explode. It just splits a little and spills out air.

Also, in reading the article I'm thinking the marker the kid used was one of the Brass Eagle pump guns. Around 2004-2005ish they had to re-release their talon or whatever with one of those new and improved end caps. Everyone knows how completely SHIZZLY [I DON'T WASH MY HANDS AFTER I WIPE] Brass Eagle is, so the only real surprise is that a 12g CO2 can travel fast enough and is massive enough to kill.
11B's have to kill at least 5 Chuck Norris clones in order to graduate OSUT.

The OpsGear message boards suck.

The only way to decrease the possibility of this happening is "Situational awareness". Keep your eyes and ears open at all times, you'll hear /see the tank coming apart. React quickly, save lives! Thanks DvS21, you earned a Golden Backpat.

Very good article, however I do not apprecitate the use of "weapon", "combat-style game", and "pistols". But, I am very sorry fo their lose.

Can I leave it with C02 for weeks at a time, off the gun of course without fear of explosion?

Yes, as long as it is kept at room temperature. CO2 is only problematic inside a tank when the tank is exposed to warmer temperatures.

Is there any way I could release all the C02 safely, without firing the gun off? Thanks,

If you have a remote line, you could go outside (or at the field, just be outdoors), and attach the remote to the tank and vent it into the atmosphere. Just be careful and control the hose so it doesn't swing around and possibly hit something.
