Other than the cyclone they are fundamentally the same marker but if I had to choose I'd get the 98C and a decent hopper I hate the cyclone feed.

hmm well i'll be the odd ball and say get a sp-1 with a decent hopper, everyting about it blows the 98c out of the water and the sp-1 only costs $150, i am currently trying to sell my a-5's because my sp-1 just works better for what i do, it depends on what you're looking for out of a marker, if it's down the road customization then definitely go with a tippmann, but if you want a kick butt marker for a decent price i say go sp-1

The cyclone feed is awesome when it works it does feed reliably however it is also rough on paint and breaks in the cyclone are very hard to clean and if the cyclone itself breaks you have to dismantle the entire thing and that isn't something you can easily do in the staging area. A good quality motorized hopper works just as well if not better if you don't mind buying a 9v battery every now and then and when/if you decide to buy a new marker you already have the hopper the A5 hopper only works with A5s and X7s.

That is the difference i dont personally care for the sp-1. I voted for other. I would say a pro-lite or procarbine. Sturdier guns in the long run. Plus now they can be had with tanks and hoppers for $100 and less.

I had a 98 and it wasnt bad. Actually liked it. Had a few a-5's. No problems except with an rt trigger. But no problems with the cyclone.

Alot of it will depend on feel. I prefer the rifle type. But now I dont know after playing with cockers so long. I am getting a procarbine since I found my old all american barrel that will fit it. So i will have to find out.

haha...
well if you want to try speedball dont get an a-5 from experience... the cyclone sticks way too far out the side...

i've owned
pmi black maxx -noob walmart gun
pmi piranha- next level up noob gun
cci phantom- pump marker, still play with it on occassion
98 custom- great marker, but it didnt keep up with my playing
2 a-5's- well i needed two and still wasnt happy
and finally my sp-1 which i find works the best for me, i do alot of running around the field, and where we play it's extremly rocky so i needed something durable and light... if you havent checked out the sp-1 before you totally should

anyways it totally depends on what you're using it for...

Go for the 98C. Just remember to get a new barrel and chuck the stock one.

Hands down, the 98 is a much better choice if you want to compare it to the A5 and since my A5 is w/o the Cyclone, it operates just like my 98

1. Has less Internal Parts

2. Easy to Mod (reshaping the whole body)

3. Is more Air/Co2 efficient than the A5

4. Much Lighter than the A5

5. Cheaper to purchase than an A5

EDIT: I forgot one....any hopper can be used on a 98.

If I had to choose between the two I would go for the 98, better yet the newer 98 platinum series. I've never been a fan of the cyclone - to me it's an overcomplicated system that does a very basic thing. Considering they work of the same valve system the A-5 is built very bulky.

However, if you feel dedicated to being a Tippmann fan I would search for a Pro/Carbine. Provided you aren't into spraying out the paint it's built using far nicer materials. It embodied the "reliable" image Tippmann built up before they started coming out with cheaply made mass produced clamshell designs.
