A-5s and 98cs are essentially the same gun beneath the surface. I'm not sure what would make one quieter than the other.

Ported barrels will always help.

As for the Phantom - the TPC, or bolt diffuser seems to make it quieter than other pumps of similar design. Coupled with a well ported aftermarket barrel, they can be quite silent. However, a tuned Sniper at lower pressure ranges will always seem to be quieter.

I have a Q for everyone with a stiffi. Since we are talking about sniping as well. Do you think it would be a bad idea to use a stiffi while wearing a ghillie suit?

Why would it matter?

Well I read all this stuff about swabs catching in the porting and messing up the barrel, so I was wondering if a ghillie could potentially cause the same effect?

Hey I have a stiffi, rocket cock composite, and some internal modding done on my 98, it's pretty quiet now. It's not as quiet as ALOT of other markers but it works for me (stats reflect it). The whole thing with the swabs was that strands would get caught in the porting and slowly deteriorate the inside around the porting. I have a cover over my barrel so none of the burlap can touch it (I'm still unsure, better safe than sorry). I don't think it would matter though, because it takes alot of swabbing to destroy the barrel and the ghillie shouldn't be moved around that much. But all in all it's a good gun to snipe with.

I've got a response trigger in mine, and a 14 inch barrel that isn't ported.

Honestly, I've never had someone get my position from my gun. Even doing hit and runs I can sometimes blindside people, get off shots, and move away, without them knowing the direction I'm moving because of the sound.

I used a few stock rental (or very abused) 98C and it didn't sound like a horde of elephants. Just like a single rampaging elephant ;) Can't say t hat my A5 is quiet but they were noisier than my A5.

98% of people on this forum will say that Tippmann pwns all. If you are one of the 2% that disagrees put this in your sig

Ow. This is painful for me to read.
Yes there are a few things to quiet a 98 down but not matter what you do it is still going to be pretty loud.
Better to buy a blow-forward. You'll thank yourself.

I took my 6 year old 98 custom to my local field last week. I've done just about every modification a person can do to a 98 while keeping it semi auto. I was providing some long range support for a guy trying to advance up field, after the game he told me that I had the quietest marker he has ever heard, he said all he could hear was the ball wizzz by. You can make them quiet, its just how much time do you want to spend on a marker?
:P

and we're talking about paintball guns here. not actual firearms, if a paintball gun is as loud as a heard of elephants to you, dont ever play with real guns.
