http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/arti...ticle_id=490669

'A soldier, who was at the trials, said: "This technology is incredible. If I hadn't been present I wouldn't have believed it. I looked across the fields and just saw grass and trees - but in reality I was staring down the barrel of a tank gun."'

And these things are ready by 2012 :D

Considering that these are Challenger 2's that are going to be upgraded, there's now pretty much no chance of them being taken out whatsoever. As if all the other major military-related advances weren't enough, this should have potential enemies wetting themselves.

That would be cool but if anyone is using FLIR they're hosed.

Still have to deal with IR heat signature. But very cool regardless.

The heat signature's pretty damn low while running and barely detectable, but while the stealth system's running the tank can just switch off the engines and wait till the enemy wander into view.

With the longest effective range of all tanks, it means we'll have the perfect vehicle for ambushes.

ah...engineering at it's finest. unfortunately, tanks still give off tons of heat, but nonetheless...very, very cool.

Hmm. Something tells me that this is not the first time its been tested. It is probably being used somewhere. Governments just wont let anyone know.

Yeah, tanks are massive heat conductors, the engines put off ALOT of heat and their surrounded by steel and cermics, they litterally glow on FLIR.

As far as turned off, residual heat will stay around alot longer then battery life.

You really want an Invisible Tank...fire Several Rockets with Hillucinating Drugs at the enemy and get them all Stoned outta their Minds.

And btw, I can tell the idea of the Invisible Tank was concocted by the Brits, since the pic shows a Challenger MBT, not an M1 Abrams.

I figure it to be something along the lines of bending the light around the object. Since what we see is, in actuality, just light being bounced off of an actual object, if you can take light from one side, and get it to the other, you're essentially invisible.

I believe researchers and/or students at either MIT or Cali Tech developed a primitive demonstration of this. Google would probably provide more answers on that than I can. Only trouble would be seeing out, as if the light is refracted around you, what would you see?
