Action Ghillie KitSpecial Ops - Action Ghillie for the Paintball Sniper

The Woodsball Revolution brings you the Sniper Revolution

Military snipers pull on their burlap ghillie suits and slip into enemy territory, looking for a long-distance kill. Paintball snipers do not have the luxury of long-range engagement. They must get close to their target – close enough to make a single, sure shot.

For twenty years, Special Ops Paintball snipers have been working on the perfect paintball ghillie suit. Today, we present to you the Special Ops Action Ghillie system. If you've spent some field time in the traditional burlap ghillie suit, then you'll recognize the huge improvements we've made.

  • Action Ghillie KitBurlap ghillie suits are way too hot for most people. By layering clump after clump of burlap over yourself, you basically wrap yourself in a giant fuzzy blanket. Special Ops Action Ghillie uses light, vinyl leaf attached to a mesh base garment. The breeze blows right through your Special Ops Action Ghillie to keep you cool and comfortable.

  • Traditional burlap ghillie is typically worn over standard camo BDUs. Not only do you wear the ghillie, but you also wear a full set of clothes underneath. Talk about hot! Some days, you feel like you're going to spontaneously combust while waiting for an ambush. The Special Ops Action Ghillie system is built around its own mesh base garment. This pants and shirt combo are patterned after the Special Ops Marauder camo – but they're made out of super-tough mesh fabric. The collars and cuffs are wide, knit fabric for maximum comfort and you get the same draw-band waist as with the Marauders. It's the perfect base for the perfect ghillie system.

  • Most burlap ghillie kits include only a poncho or jacket that leave your legs uncovered. In our experience, you need camo over your legs as much as anywhere. Special Ops Action Ghillie is offered as a pants and shirt combination because anything else is only half a sniper suit.

  • Before Special Ops Action Ghillie, the paintball sniper had to buy a set of BDUs or other base garment and then buy his burlap ghillie suit too. Now, you need only buy the Special Ops Action Ghillie system and you get your base garment built-in for the same price. That's a savings of around $70.

  • TAction Ghillie Kithe science of camouflage has come a long way since the Scottish Highlanders first invented burlap ghillie before World War I. Today, we recognize that very fine burlap ghillie tends to visually "clump together" losing much of its ability to camouflage – especially at close range. If you're like us, you've picked off paintball snipers a number of times by noticing the solid lump profile that their burlap ghillie suit presents. Special Ops Action Ghillie takes 3-D camo to the next level. The military-standard leaf vinyl gives a much more natural profile – casting shadows and highlights where they will best fool the eye. Also, the leaf presents a slightly "chunkier" pattern than burlap and this chunkiness more accurately mirrors the foliage of forests and fields in the wild. Ultimately, you'll find that Special Ops Action Ghillie allows to you get much closer to your target, completely undetected.

  • One constant problem with burlap is fire danger. Since burlap naturally burns very well, you are required to spray fire retardant on your burlap ghillie before wearing. This fire retardant becomes its own irritant and many players complain about the fumes and the smell. Special Ops Action Ghillie is made from mil-spec leaf that is already fire resistant. No noxious fumes or need to spray them with fire retardant.

  • Burlap ghillie suits shed tiny fibers as the burlap fluffs from use. These fibers find their way into the player's nose and eyes, causing irritation and the urge to cough. Special Ops Action Ghillie avoids these issues since vinyl leaf does not shed at all.

  • Burlap ghillie suits are undeniably bulky and are not well-suited to athletic movement. Many burlap ghillie suits are ponchos that make it very difficult to move. Running around a field in burlap is hot and awkward. Special Ops Action Ghillie is lighter and leaner – you will have no problem jumping up and running when an ambush goes south.

Feature: SpecOps Action Ghillie: Burlap Ghillie:
Price $139.95 for top & pants complete kit. $99 for poncho kit plus $70 for base garment. $169 total without pants.
Base Clothing Includes super-tough Marauder-style mesh pants and top. A $70 value.. Not included.
Heat Comfort All-mesh design allows the breeze to blow right through your ghillie suit. Heavy, layered ghillie and base garment hold heat in like a blanket.
Coverage Top and Pants complete coverage. Usually only a poncho, leaving your legs exposed.
Athletic Fit Built on super-athletic Marauder camo base. Very free movement. Bulky poncho cut. Not designed for a quick escape.
Fire Resistance Vinyl leaf is already fire resistant. Burlap requires that you spray smelly fire retardant on your suit.
Fiber Shedding Vinyl leaf doesn't shed. Burlap sheds micro fibers that irritate the eyes and sinuses.
Camouflage Tech "Chunkier" vinyl leaf fools the eye with 3-D shapes and colors. Much better for close-up work. Burlap is too fine, causing the wearer's profile to "clump". Burlap fiber is less natural than leaf.

Special Ops - Action Ghillie Hood

Either as a companion to the Action Ghillie suit or on its own, the Special Ops Action Ghillie Hood camouflages your most important piece of paintball equipment: your melon. Action Ghillie HoodThe base Ghillie Hood is made from the same super-durable, breathable athletic mesh as the rest of the Action Ghillie system and it provides complete mask and goggle camouflage.

The Ghillie Hood quickly wraps around your mask and attaches to itself around front with an interlocking Velcro strap. If you want to be able to strip your Ghillie Hood off when you're done playing sniper, you can pull it off in seconds. But, if you're a committed sniper, you'll want to attach the Ghillie Hood to your mask in a more permanent fashion with the provided ties and clasps.

The Ghillie Hood comes with four colors of camo leaf and 300 attachment ties. It only takes about thirty minutes to place ghillie on your hood and you can do it while you watch TV. Choose from our four sets of camo leaf to best match your playing field.

The Ghillie Hood fits every mask on the market and can be ordered to fit a mask with a visor or without a visor.

Action Ghillie Gloves

Special Ops - Action Ghillie Gloves

No Sniper suit would be complete without camo gloves. SpecOps Paintball finishes off it's Action Ghillie System with these breathable mesh gloves. With rubberized grips on one side and ghillie-ready mesh on the backs, you take just a moment to zip on ghillie left over from your Action Ghillie suit and you're ready to hit the field.

Doesn't come with its own ghillie leaf (because it only takes a couple of scraps,) unless you request it. Sized in Medium, Large and Xtra Large.

Special Ops - Action Ghillie Rifle Rag

New from Special Ops Paintball – ghillie camo actually invented just for paintball guns!! Other ghillie gun camo tends to slide up your barrel and work its way loose as you play. The Special Ops Action Ghillie Rifle Rag uses an innovative system of gripping rubber and Velcro to attach firmly to the barrel and stock of your marker.

Action Ghillie Rifle RagUtilizing the superior Action Ghillie leaf system, our Rifle Rag supports the 3-D leaf system that the US military currently employs. Action Ghillie Rifle Rag comes in one of four camo leaf collections to better match your field of play.

It takes only fifteen minutes or so to attach your chosen ghillie pattern to the elastic snake and then it takes just seconds to wrap it around your paintball gun. The Action Ghillie Rag comes in two sizes: regular for paintball guns with twelve inch barrels or shorter and extra long for paintball guns with twelve inch barrels or longer.

If you're not putting ghillie on your paintball gun then you can be sure that your gun's giving you away. Make your equipment vanish into the forest with the Action Ghillie Rifle Rag.

Action Ghillie FAQs

Action Ghillie KitQ: Is it hard to build my own Action Ghillie?
A: No, it's not hard. A smart monkey could do it. But, it does take some time. For decades, snipers have poured loving care into the creation of their own custom ghillie suits. Making a personal ghillie suit is easy and rewarding – and you can do it all while you watch TV.

Q: How is the SpecialOps Paintball Action Ghillie different from the traditional burlap ghillie?
A: Burlap ghillie was invented before World War I and it was long overdue for a re-design. The biggest problem with burlap ghillie is that it gets really hot. Action Ghillie uses a breathable mesh base garment and open leaf pattern. The wind blows right through Action Ghillie making it much more comfortable. Also, Action Ghillie was designed for the paintball sniper. Military snipers spend long hours in one place while paintball snipers can expect to do more running and maneuvering. Our ghillie was made to run, jump and generally haul butt. Also, the Action Ghillie doesn't require stinky fire retardant nor does it shed burlap fibers. All around, the Action Ghillie System beats traditional burlap ghillie hands-down when it comes to paintball.

Q: Does the Leaf Ghillie really work better than burlap?
A: Does it ever! Action Ghillie 3-D leaf casts shadows and highlights where burlap does not. That's not so surprising when you consider that the forest floor looks a lot "chunkier" than burlap. The texture of camo leaf blends very well in the forest, brush and desert.

Q: Does the leaf make noise as I move through the brush?
A: Action Ghillie is made from die-cut vinyl leaf and it makes no more noise than your regular cammies. The leaf is fairly limp (but amazingly tough) and it makes very little noise.

Q: Will the leaf snag in the brush?
A: All ghillie suits snag a little. You can't have 3-D camo without it hanging up in the brush some, but it's really not a problem. When your Action Ghillie snags on a branch, just keep going and the snag will tear free. Most snags are just loops that you left when you built your suit and you need them pulled out anyway. If you do lose some leaf, just zip a patch of leaf in later. You should look your suit over every ten or twelve times you play just to keep it full and bushy.

Q: Will the leaf hold tough to my ghillie suit?
A: Our military-spec vinyl leaf is very tough. It's strong enough to hang tight to your ghillie base garment but not so tough that snags won't pull free. We've been using the same vinyl camo leaf for more than fifteen years and we're very happy with its durability.

Q: Where does Ghillie come from anyway?
A: During World War I, the Germans began employing long-distance "snipers" to shoot across no-man's land at the allies in their trenches. The British sought help with their sniper problem from the legendary "Ghillie" game wardens of the Scottish highlands. These men had perfected the art of hunting game (and catching poachers) by using burlap camouflage suits of their own invention. The British began fielding snipers in burlap camo and the rest is sniper history.

Instructions for Building your Special Ops Action Ghillie Systemdownload action ghillie kit instructions

Step One. Cut your leaf into squares roughly six inches by six inches.

Step Two. Get comfortable in front of the TV. Divide your leaf into four piles or bowls according to pattern. Open a bag of attachment ties and put them where they're easy to reach.

Step Three. Begin with the mesh top at the collar and start zipping the leaf onto the mesh. Run the attachment tie through a hole in the mesh and bring it back out through the hole next to and diagonal from the first hole. Do not run your attachment ties through holes that are more than one away from your first hole or you'll make the fabric pucker. This is common sense, but we thought we'd mention it anyway. Make sure that the ties zip to themselves on the OUTSIDE of the garment so that the little, blocky connector on the tie is not against the wearer's skin. Only a loop of the tie's strap should go inside of the garment.

Step Four. Once you've zipped your first piece, add another piece by slightly overlapping with your first piece. Use the same ties to attach both the edge of the first and the edge of the second pieces. You should use about three ties per square of leaf, on average. But, don't forget that some or all of those ties will actually be anchoring more than one piece of leaf.

Step Five. Keep adding squares of leaf until you have fifty or so ties poking out all over the place. Use wire cutters or scissors to trim off the tails of the ties. Cut them as close to the connector blocks as you can. You want to leave as little plastic sticking up as possible.

Step Six. Make sure to vary your leaf pattern. It's a good idea to put light-colored pattern where you'll usually cast shadows (under your arms and between your legs) and dark color pattern where you'll usually pick up light (on your shoulders.) Don't overcomplicate this, though. Just about anything you do will look good.

Tips for Building and Maintaining your Special Ops Action Ghillie System

  • Action Ghillie KitDon't tie the edges of your leaf pieces without using the same tie to attach the next piece. If you do, you'll run out of ties early.
  • The basic kit will get you a well-covered, light, ghillie suit. If you want a dense pattern, buy one extra set of leaf and an extra 300 attachment ties.
  • When you attach leaf to border areas like the cuffs, neck and bottom of the top, let some leaf overhang so that the line of the border is visually broken up.
  • Be careful not to stretch the leaf when you attach it. Stretched leaf will break (which is just fine,) but it might leave a hole in your pattern afterwards.
  • Once you've finished your suit, run your fingers through the leave and clip any loops you find with a pair of scissors. Loops tend to grab in the brush. By cutting them, you'll make your suit less likely to snag.
  • After you've cut loops, look for holes where you can see the base garment. Add leaf here-and-there where your suit shows through the leaf. Use extra ties to close gaps between leaf squares.
  • When you're playing and your suit snags on brush, just yank and let the leaf tear. Leaf is tough, but it tears when you need it to. Don't worry about tearing your leaf, you can easily repair it later.
  • Hang on to your extra leaf and attachment ties. You'll use them later.
  • Each time you play, you'll pull off a little bit of leaf. Every month or so, look your suit over and fill in any gaps with extra leaf.
